Mobile safety question

I am making a mobile to hang above the baby's crib...similar to this https://www.etsy.com/listing/182831859/rain-cloud-mobile-with-book-paper?ref=favs_view_1
My question is the part with the beads....it makes me nervous to have tiny choking hazards hanging above my baby, depending only on my tying skills.  What do you guys think?  I need something to weight the clouds down...I was going to cut out card stock raindrops and put a drop or two of hot glue gun glue to see if that sufficiently weighted everything properly.  The beading looks so pretty, though.  Am I being paranoid?  I guess a mobile is essentially a bunch of choking hazards hanging above a baby's head anyways...paper just seems safer!

  • Thanks!  It is proving a challenge to get everything level and to not get all the clear line tangled up while sewing the clouds on!  I think the beads look SO pretty...and the card stock doesn't look quite as nice....I guess I can try to test it with gentle tugs to make sure everything is pretty secure, too.  It will be high enough where baby won't be able to reach it ever, but I don't want anything to come lose.

  • So I made my own Mobile. I used a really heavy duty fishing line. I have concerns about the height, but it can easily be raised as my LO gets older. DH swore that the fishing line I used can withstand WAY more than the weight of some beads! image

  • I used clear stuff for beading.

I love using fishing line to get that floating look! Most fishing lines can withhold weights from 5lbs-100lbs+!!
I always use a 10lb test weight. That way I have peace of mind hanging things!

    Posted too soon! Lol

    Both look suuuuuper adorable!!
  • I wish I had used fishing line, but I imagine beading thread is pretty strong--no one wants their jewelry to fall apart, right?  I bought some turquoise beads that are tear drop shaped and am in the process of adding them.  Once I get them all on, I am going to put a tiny drop of glue at the bottom of the beads to secure them extra:)  I am pretty proud of my efforts!

  • I just hung some birds this weekend and was a little concerned with height too- but my BFF reminded me that you'll be lowering the mattress height when it would become an issue anyway.

What brand is the pillow you have in LO's crib? A similar infant positioner was recently recalled because it poses a danger to LO. I'd recommend googling the brand to see if what you have there is safe to use. :)

  • @Emerald27 yes, it is the nap nanny. It was given to me by my sister- I know the risk associated with it- but plan to use it more as an on the floor lounger while Im around- IMO, if used supervised, it's not different than the threat a rock and play or a bumbo poses. Thank you for being concerned though!!

And (correct me if I'm wrong) wasn't it only recalled when people used them IN a pack 'n play or crib? It was fine on the floor? Kind of like people aren't supposed to use a Bumbo on a table or something?

I don't have one of those things, so I never really looked into it.

  • Mine is just in the crib right now, along with her changing pad, car seat, and a few other things that I don't want cat hair on, because surprisingly my cats don't go in her crib! Darn cat hair gets on everything!!
