Special Needs

Harumph! Dentist appt today

DH took Chris to the dentist today.
FIVE cavities.  :-(

He has more cavities than years old.  So of course, on top of the fact that it's going to cost us $300 for them to TRY laughing gas.  I know they have to try for the least amount of medication but honestly, he needs to be sedated.  There is no amount of laughing gas that is going to 'mellow' him out enough to withstand the sound of the drill.

And now, DH is on his high horse about how he told me not to give Chris those fruit snacks because apparently they're terrible for his teeth.  I'm thinking it's that, plus the apple juice, plus the fact that it's like trying to hold a greased pig when we're trying to brush his teeth.  So he's put a ban on the fruit snacks.

You all know how picky our kids are and that's one of the few things he likes to eat - he has them with his sandwich daily.  And now he can't have that.

I'm so bummed.

Hugs! I'm sorry. I've been on the crappy side of dental news with DS1 (ADHD/ anxiety). The whole experience makes you feel crappy as a mom. I read that it is harder or those with special needs, in general, to care for dental Heath. My DS had 9 cavities that required general anathesia in a hospital. He was your sons age at that time. It was $1500 OOP. We too cut down on sweet snacks. DS1 did have one cavity filled under the laughing gas. Between the 2 experiences (he hated the drill) and with age. He as gotten better at brushing and has increased his palate. We talk and remind DS of the importance of brushing. Hopefully, there is light at he nod of the table for u guys too.

  • Aww, that sucks--I'm sorry. Nitrous does nothing for DD1. We tried to get sealants put on her molars last month, and we ended up giving up after an hour and paying OOP for the nitrous. This week I have to take her to get her front teeth pulled because her permanent teeth aren't pushing them out. I'm skipping the nitrous. Hopefully she won't freak out too much at the shot.
  • I'm really sorry.  :(  I dread the day we have a similar situation with DS1.  He doesn't eat fruit snacks, but he eats a jar of fruit puree every day and went through a phase where he was actually swishing it around his mouth like mouthwash.  Ugh!  We brush his teeth shortly after but we have trouble with morning brushing and I'm really afraid of dental problems.  We're going to attempt x-rays at his next dental appointment.

I'm sorry for the double whammy of cavities and now losing a food.  Good luck, I hope somehow it won't be that bad.

Are you working with a pedodontist familiar with kids on spectrum? It might be worth the effort of finding someone who is.

Yes, or at least that's their 'claim to fame' but even DH said he didn't know what they were thinking if they thought the nitrous would get Chris to tolerate/cooperate.  I've sent them a note to see if sedation is an option because I really don't want to go drop $300 just to have them say "oh well let's try sedation next time, thanks for the cash."  Maybe that's not the intent but money's tight and I'm not one for dropping that much money on the chance that he might 'mellow out'.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  He does like real fruit.  Maybe I'll try seedless grapes or something similar.  This morning he seemed a little more cooperative with the brushing and I think we'll start trying to really instill nighttime brushing too - make it part of bedtime routine.
