Any LOs on iron supplements?

Sorry, guys.  I've been a bad bumpie recently.  I've had a rough couple of weeks and am hoping that I am starting to come up out of this funk.

I'm home sick today and E's doctor's office just called.  She had her 1 year blood draw last week and has a low iron count.  It was the receptionist that called me so I couldn't ask a lot of questions like how low, what could cause it, etc.  Any other LOs on Rx supplements for low iron?

Re: Any LOs on iron supplements?

  • Not on RX, but on PolyViSol. Iron can make them constipated, so you may want to keep some juice on hand in case you need to combat that side effect.

B's was borderline low at 12m, the Dr said to do the supplements until his 15m and if it is still low then we will have further blood work to investigate.

  • Thanks!  They said that there would be another draw at 15 months to check on her levels.  I just got back from picking up the Rx and I guess according to Rite Aid, our insurance didn't cover the OTC brands, which is why they called in the Rx.
  • I got that same phone call at her 9 mth appointment. It was 10.2 and we were told to start iron. I didn't because she had awful constipation at the time. At her 12 mth appointment, it was 9.6. The pedi ordered lead levels and hemogloblin studies and needless to say, I started the iron. Her lead came back at 6 and they like it below 5. I read that elevated lead can cause lower iron levels. So now we're washing her hands 4/5 times/day, washing toys daily and mopping her play area floor daily. The iron and lead will get rechecked in September, I'm hoping it improves. So yes, we're on daily iron and prune juice too.

  • @flkong‌ - yikes! I hope that the test in September shows the numbers are moving in the right direction. E's pedi office didn't mention her lead levels so I'm guessing that they were ok. @HannahAlex‌ - that's kind of how I feel too. E's been sick off and on the past week, plus just went through a growth spurt, both of which can affect iron levels. I really wish that I could have talked to her ped.
  • They tested my LO at 9 months and his levels were low. I tried adding iron-rich foods to his diet to see if that helped and didn't do the supplement. However, they rechecked at 12 month appt and levels were still low. So now he takes a supplement and will get rechecked at 15 months.

FWIW, my LO has not had any constipation issues from the iron supplement! He is on icar and has been taking it close to a month.
  • My little guy is on it. Has been since month 6. He still has a low iron count. They also checked his lead and it came back a 9 and it's suppose to be below a 5. Have been doing the iron drops and juice daily. He is a poop master, just like his dad and sister, so we haven't had any issue yet with constipation.
  • DD was a preemie, so she was on iron immediately. We had the prescription kind and she also had to take a multivitamin. I think we stopped around 9 months. It did constipate her and made her poop black. Our LC recommended baby probiotics, and they helped with the constipation. I'm out of town now but when I get home I can tell you the name of it.
