High-Risk Pregnancy

Diabetic Labor & Delivery/Birth Plans

I haven't seen this general topic discussed much here recently, and I'm having trouble coaxing answers out of my doctors, nurses, and hospital. I'm a Type 2 diabetic, 30 weeks pregnant, and currently on insulin. I'm wondering what others with preexisting diabetes are planning (or attempting to plan) for their births. In my fantasy birthing experience, I go into labor without being induced and don't have an epidural (I like to think I'm tough!). I know there's no way to know how it's all going to play out, and I know I can expect to be on an IV for an insulin drip and to have a lot of (but hopefully intermittent) fetal monitoring. What are other big areas of concern for you?

Re: Diabetic Labor & Delivery/Birth Plans

  • I'm T2 as well.  As soon as we found out we were having twins my OB told me to expect to have a c-section and not go beyond 37 weeks.  So, imagine my surprise at my 32 week appointment when she asked me if I preferred a vaginal birth or c-section.  I didn't think I had a choice, but given how well things have gone so far, it seems nothing is set in stone.

My biggest concern is how both babies will tolerate a vaginal birth.  Worst case scenario for me is delivering the 1st one vaginally, only to have to do a c-section anyway to get the 2nd one.

  • I actually found my old post with my induction birth story on here from 3 years ago when I had my daughter. I was induced (I will be with this baby too if I make it to 39 weeks).

The only reason I was and will be induced this time is because I have diabetes, no other reason. I think it would be rare to find an OB who would let you go too much farther than 39 weeks. I still hope that I will go into labor on my own...

I was told this time around that I will likely be put on an insulin drip (it's the hospital policy). Last time they let me manage my own blood sugars and insulin. I'm expecting A LOT of monitoring.

  • @heie0008‌ Thank you for sharing that! I haven't been able to find too many diabetic birth stories online that are as nicely detailed.

  • I found this last night and it cleared up a lot of my questions about what to expect: https://www.glowm.com/section_view/heading/Diagnosis and Management of Diabetes Mellitus in Pregnancy/item/162.
