Pregnant after a Loss

Cautiously saying hello ... And question about progesterone

Hi everyone. I got a BFP today at 11 dpo, due 4/23. This is pregnancy #5. I've had two losses, one at 8 weeks in 2010 and the last was at 10 weeks in January.

Looking forward to getting to know you ladies, hopefully!

I go in for my first betas tomorrow. Question I have is, do some REs or OBs put you on progesterone as a precaution after multiple m/c or do you have to test for low #'s?

I tested with a MTHFR mutation after the last loss but OB said it's not certain whether that had to do anything with the loss or not. She advised me to take a baby aspirin and I could possibly get heparin shots. But I wonder what about progesterone? (I plan to ask OB tomorrow too.)

I am sorry for your losses. Congrats on this pregnancy.

I don't know if some doctors start patients on progesterone as a precaution, but I guess it is possible. However, it really is not a miracle supplement and is only proven to help a progesterone deficiency. This is my 4th pregnancy. I have taken progesterone with each of my pregnancies but still lost 2 of them.

All that said, it can't hurt to talk to your doctor. GL.

  • Congrats and welcome :-)  I tried to get my progesterone checked, and never was given a result.... So who knows if it helps or not, but I was using progesterone cream when I conceived, and am finally to 16 weeks!  Again, welcome, I hope you stick around!

  • Congrats and welcome! I was put on progesterone after my second loss because they tested my level for my third pregnancy and it was low so each pregnancy after that I was put on it as precaution but they didn't check the level. It certainly can't hurt to be put on it but it won't save a pregnancy that isn't viable (I still miscarried even on it). Your body will only take in what it needs from it. It's worth an ask.
  • Congrats & Welcome!!

My RE puts everybody on progesterone - it's the theory of it might help and it can't hurt, so why not.

  • Congrats and welcome!

I am on progesterone but that is due to a 9/10 day luteal phase and the fact that I spotted from 4 weeks on with my first pregnancy that I subsequently miscarried.

  • Congrats and welcome!

I have been on progesterone since 3dpo, because with my last loss I had progesterone at 18 but there was no way to know if it was due to a deficiency or due to the septum.

  • Congrats and welcome!

As far as the progesterone goes, not all doctors put you on it as a protocol. I had 4 losses and am not on progesterone, as that is not the cause of my losses. They usually test your levels when pregnant from what I understand.

  • Congratulations and welcome! I've had one prior loss and with this pregnancy my OB tested my progesterone along with my HCG early on. It was a good number and I wasn't put on any progesterone supplements. I'm sure it differs depending on the OB or RE. Best wishes!

  • Congrats and welcome!

I had two losses prior and was put on progesterone suppositories at the beginning of this pregnancy. There was no testing done and my doc didn't think I needed it, but she has a "it may not help but it can't hurt" mentality when it comes to the prog, so she prescribed me some anyway. I took a low dose suppository twice daily from 7DPO to about 11 weeks. If nothing else, it definitely helped give me peace of mind!
  • i lost my son at 19 weeks last august (8-20).  I am 17 weeks now and had a cerclage stitch.  I have progesterone shots every week.  I didn't get any tests done before I got the shots...so, this may not be much help but just thought I'd share.  I was told it was for precaution to hopefully stop preterm labor.
  • Welcome and congrats! I was on progesterone with DD because I had two prior losses and a mutation of MTHFR. There are a couple different kinds and the one I have specifically causes low progesterone and low folic acid. I was put on a supplement for that, too. With this pregnancy my progesterone was tested and low before I even got a BFP, so my doctor put me on them early at 8dpo.

  • Congrats and welcome! I had 3 losses on progesterone. Some ob/re's do it but it doesn't help everyone. This pg did it again but not sure it made a difference or because peanut is well! Good luck!

  • Welcome and congratulations! My RE just monitors progesterone and likes to see it above 15 (I think) before supplementing.
  • After my first loss the doc had me tested for low progesterone, bc I mentioned how my luteal phases seemed to be short while I was charting. They came back right on the border of low and normal, so I'm on a low dose (50 mg twice a day) that I will stop at 12 weeks.
A progesterone deficiency can be the cause of early m/c, but the later a m/c is the less likely it's caused by a progesterone problem. And this is a problem that can develop even if you've had successful pregnancies- this wasn't an issue when we had my daughter 3.5 years ago, but my cycles changed and my body wasn't making enough anymore.
I say it's definitely worth asking about!!

I've had 1 healthy pregnancy (10 years ago exactly) and one miscarriage in December 2013, and this time around Doctor put me on progesterone (200 mg a day) until week 13 (which I'll be next week).
