NBR: Tipping Question

i am getting a haircut this afternoon.  the woman who cuts my hair is a co-owner of the salon, so her haircuts cost more than the other stylists ($50), she also uses a shampoo girl.  i always struggle with how much to tip the stylist, and the shampoo girl.  i've read that if the person owns the salon you don't need to tip her, but i feel funny not tipping at all.  TIA.

Re: NBR: Tipping Question

  • I try to tip about 15-20% I have never had an owner though.  I think they should still be tipped.

  • My hairdresser owns her own little space in a big spa-like place.  I usually tip 15-20%, too.  I've never heard about the owner thing, but something to think about.  I have a pixie cut, so I go about once-a-month, and she's so good about squeezing me in that I try to tip well.

  • I do NOT tip the owner who does my hair. I do give him a lovely Christmas gift, and I tip his assistant (who does my blowdry) and the shampoo girl.  He owns the salon and therefore has a very different way of getting paid.

  • I would still tip her 20% if you're happy with your cut. Yes she owns the salon but that doesn't mean everything goes into her pocket - she's got overhead to pay. I usually tip the shampoo girl $5.
  • I just struggled with this one too. Guy who highlights my hair (and charges $125 for the pleasure) owns the salon...I posted about it on MM and got varied answers. I ended up tipping him $25 - as I was checking out, I asked the cashier how much is standard to tip him. The answer I got was "always 20%" -- and I said, even though he owns the salon? and the guy said yes so that's what I did. Peer pressure. I don't think it's necessarily right though. I tip the shampoo person there $3. B/c my guy owns the salon and is still making tips, I feel like he should tip her out. Under other circumstances, I would tip $5...I also always tip more if the shampoo person ends up finishing my hair. I have thick hard to work with hair and the hardest part is blowing it out and flat ironing it. However, I also take that out of what I would be paying my stylist.
  • I tip my stylist 20% and she is the owner of the salon.
