Name opinion...

Hi girls, I would love your opinion on DH's and I's two name ideas... William David or Austin David. No nicknames for either name. William is a name we like, while Austin is DH's brother's middle name, so we would be using both DH's middle name and his brother's middle name to make Austin David. And we have ties to Texas, but don't live there. Thanks!!

Would you have a nickname for Austin?  (Or for William for that matter?)  That might sway me.

No nicknames. But William is a name we like, while Austin is DH's brother's middle name, so we would be using both DH's middle name and his brother's middle name to make Austin David. And we have ties to Texas, but don't live there.
  • I like either one!
  • I like Austin. Just seems a bit less common which I like.

  • I'm on team William too, I don't know if you can see my siggy, but that's the name we've chosen also. I love the classic names, so it would be William over Austin for me.
  • I like Austin David but I would definitely go with your gut.  You keep saying you like William, do you like Austin just as much? or would you choose Austin because of the family and location ties.  If you like the name William more I would go with that.

  • Are you opposed to nicknames?  I only ask because once your kiddo goes off to daycare or school or joins a sports team, William is more likely to get shortened by others than Austin (IMO).

If that bothers you, I would probably go with Austin.  If it doesn't bother you that other people might shorten your kid's name, then it sounds like you actually prefer William.

  • We are also very likely going with William, but I have a very good friend named Austin.  Both names are awesome, you can't go wrong here.  runningmama14 had a good point about nicknames.  I would personally go with Austin, I like how it sounds with David.

  • William. That's the name we are going with for our little boy
  • I like the name Austin better, and it's less popular. (Could never use it myself, bad association, it's my ex-husband's name.)

This is my thought, while both names are nice there are a lot more children out there named William so I would pick Austin. Our baby is a girl but if it had been a boy William would have been off limits simply because there are a lot of them in both of our families and it would have been too much. (Also my sister's husband is named William and I really don't like him so I wouldn't want it to seem like baby was named after him!)

I'm not really a fan of William because where I live in Texas people would call him Willie.... no thank you!
