Glucose Test - results were too low?

I ate before I went to the OB this morning (which they said I could do) but I'm wondering if my cereal could've messed with the results. My blood glucose was 74 after the hour was up. The nurse actually asked if I had finished the whole drink (yup, and it was horrible).

They said they don't start to worry until it is below 70, but with how nauseated and mentally out of it I've been feeling, I'm wondering if I should push to be monitored more (since too low can also mean diabetes). Any STM's have low scores too? Did you have to take meds or could you fix it with just diet?

Thank you!

Re: Glucose Test - results were too low?

  • The last time I did the GTT was during my second pregnancy, and my result was in the low 70's. They didn't say anything, and I didn't do anything different in terms of my diet. Though I had a u/s scheduled at 28 weeks because I was still the same weight then as I was at my first appointment at 8 weeks, which was about 7 lbs under pre-preg. The midwife was worried I wasn't gaining and wanted to make sure her growth was fine, which I wasn't worried about.

I also had a u/s at 38 weeks, and all was good. The day I was induced, at 39 weeks, I was still the same weight as I was at my first appointment, -7. I actually lost a good 15+ lbs (no m/s), and my weight was transferred to her (fat transfer). Despite not gaining any recorded weight, she was still 8 lbs., 9 oz and 21 inches.

I also lost weight with my fourth, about 20 lbs by 13 weeks (also no m/s), and I gained back about 12 of it. He accounted for 9 of that 12. However, with him I didn't do the GTT. I simply tested my glucose one hour postprandial over a course of a few days. I also did a fasting draw as well, when I woke up. I also did a one hour postprandial at around 30 weeks with my third.

This time, I'll do exactly what I did last time.

  • I was low with my first, I believe I was 72, but they didn't even question it or do anything further. This time I was 95 so I passed with flying colors again. I would say if your doctor isn't worried about it, you probably don't need to be either. But as with everything else, if you have any doubt, call your OB!

  • That is low but I dont know what, if any, significance that has. Some medications can increase insulin production and contribute to low blood sugar. Cereal would raise, not lower, your levels. I have the opposite problem so I'm not much help!

  • Could be you have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).  If you are low it wouldn't be diabetes.  Untreated diabetes leads to high blood sugars.  Lows are caused from excess insulin (which can happen as a diabetic but are usually from excess meds or increased activity levels).

74 isn't technically low, just lower than normal for a post meal reading (especially considering how sugary that drink is).  If you aren't having symptoms of low blood sugar (dizziness, blurred vision, shakiness, nausea, slurred speech etc) you are probably fine and just have an efficient pancreas :)

  • Last time, my fasting was 70, and after was 40. They wouldn't even let me drive home.
  • Mine was low last time too but they weren't worried at all.

I have to keep glucose tablets on me all the time. I can not have any carbs in before noon or it makes it crash all day. It was a problem that still bothers me, 8 years later. They call it hypo-reactive hypoglycemia. It's super fun.
If I eat bad food, it just crashes after every meal. It is never, ever high.

Hehe. Unfortunately, I wasn't as fortunate this time. I was much heavier during my other pregnancies, where it's common to either lose or not gain much weight. I've gained about 15 lbs since my first appt. :( I've been maintaining for the past six weeks, but I'm sure to gain more.
