Has anyone travelled with baby?

We are relocating. DH is already down there working at his new job and trying to find a place for us to live while I stay up here with DD trying to sell our house. His company has offered to fly me and DD down to see the area and figure out where we will be living.

The problem is that DD has So.Much.Stuff! I'm worried about her stroller/car seat getting damaged in cargo (we have the Uppababy Vista/Mesa - NOT risking that) as well as her pack n' play. I've said eff it - I trust him to pick a house, but it turns out that it's not that easy.

We plan on renting for 12-18 months until we figure out for sure where we want to buy. NO realtors want to be bothered helping us find a rental because that's not where they make their money. DH is super busy with his new job right now so he is looking, but if I could get down there I could really get it moving faster. Being apart just sucks.

So have any of you ladies travelled (plane) with LO yet? If so, how was it, what were you allowed to carry on/not put in cargo? Was it awful? Any advice is welcome.

Re: Has anyone travelled with baby?

  • If the company is offering to fly you down, make sure they buy your LO a set on the plane and use her car seat there.  Babies are safest in there seat while on and airplane just like in cars.  Carseats can be damaged if they are checked, even if they are gate checked.  Is there a way that you can send your pack n' play via ups, fed ex, etc. and then leave it with DH if you aren't using it at home?  Pack essentials that you need for the travel time plus extras, and maybe have your DH pick up extra diapers and wipes before you get down there.  Less to pack, and you will still have it available.

  • Omg @kbaker053 you are a genius! I don't know why I didn't think of buying DD her own seat!! I may just have him buy an inexpensive pack n' play down there since it would only be for a weekend.

    Thank you again!!!

We flew southwest. I checked his whole travel system at the gait. There was a tiny scratch on his seat, but I wasn't bothered with it.

He was a lap passenger, and slept the whole flight.

ETA: I packed a large Vera Bradley bag with changes of his clothes and everything we'd need should we get layed over, which almost happened. Pump, pjs, clothes for all three of us, essential toiletries, extra pampers.

  • I have the Vista/Mesa too and decided not to take it because of how careless they are when "placing" it in the cargo area. Uppababy does sell a travel bag for the stroller for $90sh. I believe they insure it and all it's parts if it's in the bag and damaged by airline. I also believe the insurance is good for two years.

Instead of taking the base, car seat, and stroller with me, I wore DD in the Ergo and rented a car seat and stroller while on vacation for $45 for 5 days.

  • I dont mean this to sound bad but if you are going for just a weekend, could someone watch lo while you go? I dont know if you are breastfeeding or if you would feel uncomfortable leaving lo. I wouldn't be able to leave lo :)
  • You just told my life story. If you need any help or suggestions feel free to message me. My husband has been living 13 hours away since January. I had to go out in June when DD was 6 weeks old to find a house. We fly out on Saturday to move permanently. Movers were here last week and I'm in limbo while we stay at my parents. It's crazy, but it all works out. We're also renting for the first year and selling our house. I also have a 4 year old. Thank God for relocation packages...
  • I travelled by plane when LO was 5 weeks old.

Sounds like you are now planning to get your LO a seat. I was wondering if you were staying at a hotel. The Marriott we stayed at actually had pack n plays and we just used our own bedding.

I would recommend going extra early to airports. We had huge issues checking in our infant and missed one of our flights as a result.

Airports and planes are unpredictable for temperatures so bring lots of different weights of clothes. I also liked wearing our baby through the airport in his carrier.

DD is EBF so this isn't an option for us.
  • We are on a little vacation now, I took baby on a two hour flight to visit friends. Just the two of us, husband stayed home. I bought a $70 pack n play on Amazon and had it shipped directly to my friend's house (we have prime) and gate checked car seat and caddy. The trip was not as bad as the horror stories I heard, whenever I was obviously struggling *someone* offered to help, employee or traveler. TSA was polite and helpful and had no issues with my request to hand check my milk with new gloves. My seat mates were two young guys who chatted with each other entire time, they seemed not to even notice baby when she fussed.

  • We just moved when LO was 9 weeks. No flying involved, but I wound up doing a two day drive alone with LO. I wish I'd done a bit of a test run first to work out the kinks, make sure I had everything packed efficiently (I didn't) and paced my travel by her schedule a bit more.

Critical lesson learned: You can't have too many clean ziplock bags. Great for keeping clean things clean and dirty things from getting everything else dirty. Says the mama of a little girl who has one messy blowout a day, even on the road. ;)

GL with the traveling and househunting!
  • Are you staying in a hotel? I traveled many many times with DD1 and have never stayed in a hotel that didn't have a pack n play. I definitely would not gate check an Uppababy stroller. Better off buying a cheap lightweight stroller for travel than a $90 travel bag. Every single time I gate checked a stroller it got damaged a little. I also prefer not bringing a stroller at all in the airport and just babywearing instead during the entire trip. Make sure to bring 2-3 changes of clothes for the airplane and twice as many diapers as you need in case of delays.
