CD Check In?

Would anyone be interested in doing a cloth diaper check in? I'm a FTM and am super excited about CDing, but realize that it probably won't go as planned, just like many baby things. I know there's a CD board, but was wondering if it's something you ladies would be interested in doing here.

Re: CD Check In?

  • Sure, sounds good to me.

I'm washing mine right now since DD still wears one overnight, though she's been daytime potty-trained for quite a while. She had 2 weeks of being dry in the morning then 4 soaked ones in the last week.

I'm hoping baby pee is a lot less potent than toddler pee! And I'm a little dreading dealing with poop in diapers again.

  • I'm cool with it but emma is to small for her newborn cloth (although I want to put them on her anyway) FI parents bought her 316 preemie diapers, I got a pack of preemie dipes from the hospital, my mom bought us a pack and we bought a pack....I'm doubtful well need all those diapers....

Once Emma had outgrown the preemie diapers, check into your local emergency parent groups (like church support groups or something) or women's shelters. A friend works in a shelter here and she says they always are looking for diapers in every size, but have the hardest time getting the preemies. :)

  • @tamarar5‌ i certainly plan on donating the excess. I feel like I'm swamped in preemie dipes lol. I was a little upset everyone bought us so many dipes in preemie size because really...she'll only be this big for so long...she's already gained 3 ozs since leaving the hospital yesterday!

  • I would love a check in. I'm doing our first full load of CD laundry as we speak! I'm oddly excited about it. My husband has been doing the majority of the diaper changes since I have a hard time getting around right now, and I'm pretty shocked he's been doing so well with prefolds and covers! No leaks so far. We were given a large amount of size 1 diapers by a friend, and since I have a chunkster that fit them right away, we've been using a lot of those as well.

My basement is flooded! Nothing ever for as planned. I hope I will have a working washing machine when baby comes on Sunday! If I don't get to use my cute nb diapers I will be so mad! I love the check in idea BTW!
  • I'd be interested in a check in once LO arrives (end of the monther)! I have mine all washed and in the drawer just waiting to be used! Sometimes I open the drawer just to look at all the cute designs!! We didn't buy newborn cloth so we might not be able to start for a little while
  • I'm still using our stash of NB disposable dipes. We did stick a Charlie Banana on her a couple of times and within 2 min she had pooped... Fail! The cloth dipes just feel so bulky on her still, and we have a few left to buy to really get our stock built up.
  • I'm game for a check-in. I'm sure once baby is born and we start using our newborn stash, I'll have a ton of questions!

ok- I'm getting really nervous about wash cycle for some reason.  We're going to do disposables until meconium is done & then I want to be ready to wash.  DH is starting to waffle & I totally want to smack him...he's going to have to suck it up.

What do our pros think about this?

    1.
PREWASH- 16 min prewash and spin cycle (this adds to front of cycle)
    or
Rinse+Spin - separate cycle then I'd have to go back and re-start it

    2. NORMAL CYCLE - what water temp should I select?  add in SOIL LEVEL= HEAVY?

EXTRA RINSE- adds to end of cycle, helps remove build up

I would do prewash instead of rinse/spin so you get the agitation to really rinse out anything. Then hot wash (heavy soil is probably a good idea), extra rinse. FTM of an inside baby but this is what I've read over and over as a good wash routine. I plan to do almost the exact same thing.

  • Ok, sounds like there's enough interest that a check in would be a good idea. Do we want to do it on a weekly schedule (say every Tuesday?) or...?

  • @zoegirltx, I use the rinse and spin cycle, but only bc I can't do a cold water pre-wash. I do the rinse cycle in cold water before doing a hot water wash. That happens to work for me, but it's certainly not the only way to do it. I would try pre-wash at first, which sounds easier anyway, then mix things up if it's not working for you (ie dipes still smell).

I never kept disposables in the house (we started in cloth and I never had trouble washing out the meconium) partly to keep DH on board by not giving him another choice. Once he got used to using the cloth diapers, he was totally ok with it, or at least it was our normal and he thought nothing of it. He now can't imagine regularly using disposables -- they leak a lot more, smell gross, and you have to take out your trash all the time. Of course diaper laundry has always been my chore, but I can deal with that.
