Failed the 3 hour

I'm completely shocked! I failed the 1 hour with both of my boys and then passed the 3 hour so I just thought this would be the same thing. I haven't gained any weight this pregnancy (please don't think I'm bragging, I'm overweight) so I thought I was doing good! She said I have to start checking my blood sugar 4x a day and writing it all down but that's all she said. I know a few of you other ladies have it as well, how is it going? I'm completely freaking out!

  • No experience, but I'm sorry you're going through this! FX you are able to manage this easily.

  • I'm right there with you.  I passed with DS and failed this time.  One of the websites mentioned that getting a GD diagnosis can send you through the 5 stages of mourning... which was pretty accurate for me.  I cried for a full day, and now I'm in denial because my numbers look good.  In the grand scheme of things it sucks, but it's doable.

The link in the GD thread is awesome.  I met with a nutritionist and a diabetic educator at my hospital and they were useful.  It's been less than a week so I'm still trying to figure things out.  I feel like I'm not getting enough calories but my carbs (what you need to track) are spot on.  And I can still have ice cream!

  • I am sorry that your failed but it really isn't that bad until all these notches on here start going on about French fries and cake!

Check out the gd thread and know that it is totally doable!  It can be very frustrating because each person's body handle things differently.

I have been really good about the diet and it still wasn't enough so they had to give me meds.  I am finally getting more stable numbers 6 weeks after my dx.

Hang in there and know that it is ok and you didn't do anything to cause it.

  • A lot of the treating GD is controlling carbs (eating a specific amount for each meal and snack) so you don't have spikes and drops in your blood sugar and acknowledging that despite how well you do in the diet/exercise area, you may still need meds - and that is all right.

You will also find that certain foods will be out of bounds until your LO is born but you won't know what until you start testing and tracking what you eat.  For example, I realized recently that I can't tolerate white potatoes anymore.  So, no more mashed potatoes or french fries for me.

I was diagnosed around 20 weeks and the most annoying part is remembering to test my sugars two hours after I finished my meals (and remembering to not eat anything else during those two hours).  We have had to adjust our schedule (especially on the weekend) to make sure that I will be able to do so.  Having to test in a gas station bathroom (like I did on Saturday) isn't the best idea.

If you are accustomed to consuming a good number of your calories in carbs, try to up your fat intake a bit to compensate for the lower amount of carb calories.  I am not taking about eating a tub of lard, but eat some full fat cheese as part of your afternoon snack and enjoy that 1/4 to 1/2 cup of full fat ice cream as part of your night time snack.  Also, if you like it, peanut butter (or any nut butter) is your friend right now.

I failed the 1 hour and the 3 hour.  I have to check my blood sugars 4X a day also.  I really didn't think I would need metformin but I had 3 spikes that were over 150 all about 1 week apart, so my dr wanted me to be on the medicine.  So now I have to eat a little more before I take my medicine or else my blood sugar plummets because it's not usually that high with what I'm regularly eating.  It's very frustrating!  One one hand I feel like the medicine is too much but on the other hand I don't want to do anything to risk baby's health.  And I have a horrible time remembering what time I ate so I remember to take my blood sugar at the right time!

ETA - One interesting thing about doing it is seeing how what I do eat affects my numbers.  It's kind of like a science experiment on myself. :)   I found it rather interesting that potatoes didn't elevate it at all but a flour tortilla was horrible on my numbers.  But a sandwich with wheat bread didn't affect it at all.

Follow recommendations of your dietitian and really it isn't so bad

I can tolerate a jalapeño cheddar sausage buiscit and get really close to 120 at 2 hrs but can't tolerate any fruits before 11a or I get over 150 at 2 hrs.. You will be surprised what effects you and what doesn't.

I can also eat a small peanut butter shake from sonic no problem but any other shakes there and I'm 250 range. Don't be afraid to try things just know if it gives you a high number don't try it again :)
  • Thanks ladies. I'm pretty down about it but hopefully it won't be too bad. I have no idea what the numbers are suppose to be (I know a little now from your comments) and the nurse said I would talk about it with my dr next week but didn't mention a dietician.

  • Recommendations by the association are 130 after first bite at 1 hr

    Or 120 at 2 hrs

    Under 95 fasting 8-10 hrs.

Lots of doctors tweak the GD standards so yours may be different.
  • Yep. Mine is under 90 for fasting and under 120 two hours after I eat. Looking forward to higher post natal allowance!
  • I failed my three hour as well (the 3rd hour was slightly elevated) so they sent me to a diabetes place where I got a lot of info on diet and a fancy meter to test! I have been testing my blood sugar 4 times a day for like 2 weeks now. It's not too bad and so far I've been able to control it with what I'm eating. It's different for everyone but certain things will make it higher then others. Icecream (in small amounts) has been my only resort for sweets. I have a total sweet tooth so these next 9 weeks are going to drag! But I just have to keep the baby in mind and look out for his best interest by not eating all the yummy food I crave. I hope all works out for you! My midwife told me most of the time it is controllable with diet! :)
  • Fx lady!

  • I'm so sorry. I have no advice, but I'm right there with you, I just failed my 3 hour test. I meet with my doctor tomorrow to go over results & plan. I wish you best of luck.
Me: 33 - PCOS & Hypothyroidism DH: 35 - SA is good Married since 2010 (together since 2006) TTC since June 2009 (we knew we would have issues and wanted family right away after we got married). No pregnancies yet. May 2013 - started first round of Chlomid & ovidrel cycle.
  • I got put on glyberide after a week of tracking my sugars and not being able to keep them under a certain amount. The pills have helped me get a better handle on it, as well as my diet.

It does suck and I am sorry, but not the end you will make it!
