Help me feel normal!!

I am STARVING all the time!!!! I try to eat as healthy as I can and get enough protein, etc but it doesn't help. Had my 18 wk doctor appt today and I've gained 20 lbs so far...does that sound about right? I know it's totally stupid to stress about this and focus on what's really important I just want some reassurance from those who have been there! TIA!

Re: Help me feel normal!!

  • My nutritionist was obsessed with me gaining 24 lbs by 24 weeks so it sounds like you're close to on track for that. I was hungriest in second tri and had the steepest weight gain then, for me things slowed down in third tri I guess when stomach is getting really squished by baby. If you are hungry, I'd say listen to your body and eat.

  • It is the perfect time to be starving!! Right now your babies are working on packing on the pounds. Also come third trimester your aren't going to have enough space in there to eat. Try to keep your food selection as healthy as possible... but really, as long as you aren't going crazy. Just go of it!!

  • I gained ALOT of weight with my girls, 86 pounds!  Alot of it was water and 2 weeks after having them i had already lost 50 pounds, I stalled a few months later with about 10 left to loose before I got pregnant again. Don't worry so much about the scale, eat as healthy as you can and realize that the babies need you to eat. Its totally normal to feel hungry all the time your body is doing so much!

  • Oh yes. I was a bottomless pit by then. The first tri nausea had waned and I was like, EAT ALL THE THINGS. Sure I ate healthy stuff. But I supplemented with pop tarts and potato chips and any junk I could find.

  • You don't mention whether you were underweight or ideal before pregnancy, but if you're doctor isn't worried about it then you shouldn't be either.  By 3rd tri, the babies will be squishing your stomach so much, you'll have to force yourself to eat. Eat up while you have the room.

  • If you're hungry all the time, your body is telling you you need calories.....so eat and don't worry about the numbers! I gained 50 lbs w/ my pregnancy....some women gain more, some less....but you definitely sound like you're on the right track. If your doctor isn't concerned, you're fine. :)

  • Sounds like you are on track! Keep up the good work :-)

  • If you are hungry- EAT! From all I've read- you get hungry in 2nd tri make up for sickness in first and uncomfortability in 3rd. I'm definitely gaining weight more rapidly this trimester and I'm only 15 weeks (quads). My scooter reminds me at every appt that early weight gain usually predicts healthier births. I basically eat every 2 hours and if I don't- I feel miserable!
  • Totally normal.  I was the same.  I ate anything and everything.  Enjoy eating now when your stomach isn't completely squashed by babies :)

  • Totally normal. I used to eat three breakfasts! I think I was at 20lb at 20w and 24lb by 24w. There were multiple weeks in a row in second tri when I gained three pounds a week. My weight gain slowed in third tri. Don't worry! Now I'm trying to lose the last few lbs of baby weight and I'm starving and dreaming of the days when I could eat whatever I wanted including ice cream every night! :)
