How do you clean the cord stump? I have read different things. (1 said just water, 1 said water and rubbing alcohol)
How often do you clean it? (Other than if it gets poop on it)
For the most part, leave it alone. You don't need rubbing alcohol. Sometimes it gets a little bloody but I never had issues with poop getting on it. If you notice a little dried blood, just be very gentle and use a wet wash cloth. Otherwise, don't touch it. It will figure itself out. If you notice a lot of puss, call your doctor.
I feel like I will regret this as soon as I post it but... All this talk about mucus plug got me looking now AND... Well how can you tell the difference between mucus and semen?
My mucus plug came out a little more chunky. I think the color was slightly different, too. ----------- @missnacholover Another way I like to Determine if baby is hot or cold is to feel the back of their neck. It's usually indicative of their body temperature.
1) how long does the cord stump stay on? and do you need to buy the onesies with the side snaps until it falls off?
2) does everyone get braxton hicks? i've seen a lot of women saying they are feeling them but i haven't felt anything and am wondering if i just dont know what they feel like or if i dont have them yet.

2) I have no idea of all women get them. I don't think they do.

thanks @maelara. i forget where I read that but i saw somewhere the onesie with side snaps are better for the cord than snaps in the front. they just want us to buy more crap we dont need.

I never used anything but onsies with snaps at the bottom. You bringing this up is the first time I've ever heard of it, lol!! You learn something new with each kid! Maybe buy one and report back you are due in October after all :P

Mostly used bottom snap onesies here too. I think it is more helpful to know to put a onside on under a sleeper so that you don't snap or zip the cord into a front done sleeper. Does that make sense?
I have a few side snaps that were helpful (and cute) but I didn't feel like they were necessary.

1) I think the cord stayed on a week or two. My hospital uses the kimono-style onesie shirts, but I use bottom-snap onesies at home. I think as long as they're not tight it's okay.

OK I have a dumb question that I've been wanting to ask. STMs+, when you wake up for night feedings, what do you do first- feed or change diaper? Signed, an embarrassed I have to ask this question FTM.
I fed DS on 1 side, burped, changed him, then offered the other side so he would fall asleep.
I stopped night changing a around 4 months. They were just waking him and he never got a diaper rash, so yay Pampers!
I have a question about BF. It seems like there are some N14 moms who are still BF their toddlers. Is it possible to BF both your toddler and newborn? Seems like that might get tricky!
I have a document of dumb questions I'm going to ask my sister so I will ask them here too! Behold, MissNachoLover's working list of dumbass baby questions:
How often does baby need to be bathed?
How often does baby need to be fed?
How will we know if baby is right temp - not too hot, not too cold?
When do we start tummy time?
So not a baby guru here, but this is what worked for us:
Once his umbilical stump fell off we bathed him nightly (just to establish a nighttime routine) - we only washed his hair 2-3 times a week.
He let us know when he needed food. I never woke him to nurse, and we never had weight issues. I'd say he was nursing every 2-3 hours for the first 2-3 months. At 4 months he could go 4 hours. He nursed this was till 6 months or so when he started eating on a more regular schedule (we introd solids at this time as well).
For his body temp I gauged wether he was too hot/cold by feeling his ears/cheeks. Our pedi said it's better to have him too cold than too hot, and we pretty much went by the rule of 1 light layer more for him than us. (He slept in a footed sleeper and a sleep sack, still does).
We started tummy time when his stump fell off. Didn't want it rubbing on anything. FYI - he HATED tummy time and learned to roll by 3 weeks (I shit you not) just so he could get out of it. Little stinker! We did tummy time 3ish time a day for about 5-10 minutes (or until he had turned himself a few times)
STMs that already have little girls: How are diaper changes? I've heard horror stories that poop can get in, ahem, not-fun places.
(Having a boy is easy! Clean what you see, and it doesn't matter what direction you wipe, just remember to point the penis down. Cleaning up a little girl scares me, LOL!)
Yes it can get everywhere. DD is nearly 2 years old and I just changed one like that Just always wipe front to back like you would for yourself.
Um....
Do you feel the afterbirth coming out? Or them sewing you up?
For me...Yes and no.
I "felt" the placenta coming out (I did have to push a little) but since I was snuggling my baby I don't really remember it except that the Dr. asked if I wanted to see it. After the baby was out it was like the placenta just fell out if you will.
As far as the stitching I had a numbing shot before she started. Again I was snuggling a newborn and crying so I don't really remember feeling it. I "felt" the sewing but it wasn't painful with the numbing and the precious new baby.
PS I did look at the placenta. It was actually pretty cool for me to see. She showed me where the cord was and all the neat stuff about it. Yest I refused to use the mirror while giving birth. Weird I know!
I think I'm overthinking Braxton Hicks. I don't even know if I'm having any.
Some times I'll feel no change in pressure, no pain, but I'll give my belly a hello rub, and it will feel harder than usual. It will feel like this for a while, not just a few seconds.
But how do I know if this is BH or just her position?
My OB also told me 'BH are good, don't worry about how many you have,' whole others are told to call if they have more than 4 or 6 in an hour.
But if I don't know that I'm having one, how do I count?
Um....
Do you feel the afterbirth coming out? Or them sewing you up?
If you have an epidural - no, or at least I didn't. Like with the pooping during labor, nothing really phases you at that point. You'll remain in the stirrups if you deliver vaginally, you'll deliver everything, your doc will examine you, sew you up and you'll either be holding your infant so you won't care about anything else or be waiting to hold him/her and that's where your focus will be.
I had some meconium in fluid when my water broke, so I delivered and they took DS away (same room) to examine him, make sure there was no aspiration. DH was over by him, and I just remember relaxing and being eager to hold him, make sure he was fine while my doc was sewing me up. A pot of gold could have fallen out of my vagina and I wouldn't have noticed. That's not entirely true, I may have noticed a pot of gold since we could have used it to help pay for daycare ; )
Do you feel the afterbirth coming out? Or them sewing you up?
I had a natural birth, I don't remember feeling anything after DS came out, I was just so relieved birth process was over I was oblivious to the placenta coming out and me getting sewn up.

Oh... Too much for me.
Lol! Stop worrying about them! They truly are no big deal and honestly, I never counted them when I did have them last time. It doesn't sound like you're having them, even though a big sign is your belly tightening. They are uncomfortable, bordering painful. Almost cramp like but not quiet. If you get one, you'll know.
I love this because I was terrified of having a boy and having to learn a new way to change a diaper! I'm having another girl though. Poop gets all up in the vagina. Especially newborn poops. Just make sure you get all the poop out (it can sometimes take lots of wipes) and you will be fine front to back as someone else said. If one diaper is really bothering you, wipe her down and then give her a quick bath.
My question is about your belly after birth. The other day I was at Babies R Us and saw a woman who looked VERY pregnant. She and her husband were at the registry counter asking about pumps, and I heard her say that she had just been released from the hospital and their LO was still in the NICU. I guess I kind of assumed that your belly would deflate some right after birth. Obviously you wouldn't go back to normal, but wouldn't look like you're still very pregnant. Am I wrong? STMs+, what was your belly like after delivery?
I looked about 6 months pregnant in the days after giving birth, but for me it went down pretty quick. Breastfeeding helps because it helps the uterus contract back down.

I figured that changing DS will be easier than DD, especially since we aren't circumcising him. However, our friends told FI and I that messy poops will get caught in the wrinkles of the testicles. Definitely not something I was expecting. :-/
Damnit, I total forgot about the testicles! Yet another thing to worry about- poop in the testicle wrinkles.
Yes testicle wrinkles can be tricky hahaha also beware, boys can pee like Olympians. My LO honestly would shoot 4 feet across a room sometimes! Hahaha I stuck to the changing table for changes after a few times across the living room! He also seemed to like to wait until I had the diaper off to pee... :-/
For those of you with pets, did you have to train them to behave around the baby? Mine are pretty well behaved at 3 & 4 yrs old, but they end up sleeping on our bed every night. I'm just worried about the baby hanging out with dog hair, I guess.

I think when it comes to pets, you know them best! If your worried about dog hair maybe try a vaccum a bit more or designate a doggie area on the bed. Our pooch for some reason prefers the floor, and our kitty tends to move around during the night. We're going to use an at arms reach co-sleeper the first few months. So our little one won't be in the actual bed with us.

@brooklyngirl18 Everyone has BH but you may never feel them. When they were attempting to do the cvs at 14 weeks with Brody they were waiting for me to have BH. I could see them on the screen, they would bunch up my uterus. I didn't feel anything.

Our dogs got kicked out of the bed. My little dog was terrible with DD. This time I will be putting her in the kennel or another room for the first little bit. As someone else said, you know your dogs best. It's a good idea to do some research on this one.
For changing the boys diapers.....what is the best way to keep the pee under control? Do I need to wear my motorcycle helmet with the face shield? I wasn't planning to get a changing table because we don't have much space. Is that going to be a fail move? I planned to just change him on a towel/blanket on the floor or the bed, but maybe it's going to be messier than I anticipate.

Yep, this ^^^
The clothes you are wearing now are about the size you should expect to wear home from the hospital.
---------- And even though we presently feel pretty big, it'll feel so much smaller compared to 9 months. I went back down in size pretty rapidly, but I know I was lucky. I know several women who have been out with their newborns and been asked when they are due...

With DS, fresh air down there seemed to stimulate him to pee. I learned really quickly not to set anything clean below the level of his waist. I would open his diaper for a sec to let the air in (but not take it off yet), then lay the flap back down over him while I opened the new diaper/grabbed wipes/whatever - anything that took a few seconds to do. Usually if he was going to pee, he had at least started by then and I would just wait until he finished to remove the diaper.
As far as the changing table, I don't think it's a necessity. Nice to have, but we just used a towel on the floor for DD and it was fine. And girls can have the same issues as boys, as far as peeing the second the diaper comes off. They just end up in a puddle instead of spraying it everywhere.

I can honestly count on one hand the number of times I've been peed on by DS! And it usually happened because he was literally peeing as I opened his diaper. I just would open his dirty diaper, take a look what we have going on, lay the diaper back over him, grab wipes, clean real quick and slide a new diaper under him. As long as I didn't leave him hanging out in the air for too long, he was usually good. If I had to take a minute to clean a really bad poop, I'd put a wipe over his penis just so it didn't spray anywhere. And 99% of the time, he was changed on the floor or a bed.

I looked about 6 months pregnant right after having DS and it went down in a few weeks.

If it was going to be a longer diaper change (poopy), I would just put a wipe over his penis while I cleaned him up. I also did the "slide new diaper under before removing old diaper" move so any stray pee (or poop) would be caught. I always just changed him on the couch, bed, or floor. No disasters.
What did you do/ react like when LO had their first cold?
I was so paranoid about everything with DS, but his first cold really wasn't that bad - he didn't have a fever, just really cranky and his nose was so stuffed. I remember MIL was visiting and I used the nasal aspirator for the first time (this is embarrassing but all FTMs make mistakes), I inserted it and squeezed so the air was going up his nose. MIL (who is so sweet and was never "you do it like this" as far as DS went) just sweetly said, "things may have changed in 35 years but I think you're supposed to squeeze it first and then put it into his nostril." I felt like such and idiot - I just told her "Geez MIL, if you see me doing something flat-out stupid please don't be afraid to just speak-up!" Logically it doesn't even make sense to use it like that but I was clueless. I just used the aspirator to keep him from being too congested, held-him a lot and made sure he was still feeding normally and his diapers were wet to be sure he was hydrated.
As far as nasal aspirators go - try and get more than one from the hospital (something they gave us). The hospital blue ones are awesome, any of the ones you can buy in stores suck. Our dog chewed ours and I hated all the other ones I bought in stores. My DH was seriously afraid to tell me what the dog did. I was so pissed.
I reacted with more panic to our first few diaper blow-outs compared to his first cold. He was breastfed (not sure if blow-outs are as bad with formula fed babies). I called my pedi after the 3rd one to describe what was happening, I thought there was something wrong with his colon! Pedi laughed and said if she could figure out how to invent a diaper to contain blow-outs she'd be rich.
@abbyful - I think boys are harder to clean up when they poop than girls. Girls have less creases (ie poop all over the scrotum is a mess). Like PP said, just make sure you wipe front to back and you're good.
Also, I'm sure those of you with girls know they can squirt pee all over while you change them too (usually not as far as boys). I think being quick when you change them and having the clean diaper already under them helps a lot. I rarely get peed on at work, and I change a lot of diapers.
@Becks517 - It's normal to look 5-6 months pregnant after you have a baby. Everyone is different, but the majority of people still have a "belly". It takes a little bit for that stretched out uterus to go back down.

Did you take LO everywhere around the house with you when they're newborn? Like move them around in their carrier with you if you needed to pee/ shower/ cook/ etc?
Lol, please don't put them in the carrier every time you do something! It can create flat head. When I went to the bathroom, I put her either in her crib or the PnP I set up I'm the living room. I pretty much put her in those spots every time I did anything. I only cooked when DH was home unless it was the microwave. But looking back, the bouncer on the floor would have been fine. For the first little while, I also only showered when DH was home but I got used to that fast. I would put the bouncer in the bathroom with me to shower or just wait until they are napping

I stopped night changing a around 4 months. They were just waking him and he never got a diaper rash, so yay Pampers!
my happy boy

Just always wipe front to back like you would for yourself.
Oh... Too much for me.
I love this because I was terrified of having a boy and having to learn a new way to change a diaper! I'm having another girl though. Poop gets all up in the vagina. Especially newborn poops. Just make sure you get all the poop out (it can sometimes take lots of wipes) and you will be fine

I love you. Don't even care if that's creepy.
Damnit, I total forgot about the testicles! Yet another thing to worry about- poop in the testicle wrinkles.
He also seemed to like to wait until I had the diaper off to pee... :-/
Everyone has BH but you may never feel them. When they were attempting to do the cvs at 14 weeks with Brody they were waiting for me to have BH. I could see them on the screen, they would bunch up my uterus.
I didn't feel anything.
I wasn't planning to get a changing table because we don't have much space. Is that going to be a fail move? I planned to just change him on a towel/blanket on the floor or the bed, but maybe it's going to be messier than I anticipate.

And even though we presently feel pretty big, it'll feel so much smaller compared to 9 months. I went back down in size pretty rapidly, but I know I was lucky. I know several women who have been out with their newborns and been asked when they are due...
@-)

Wait, What?!? - EDD 11/1/19

I always just changed him on the couch, bed, or floor. No disasters.
