Nuchal translucency + sex of baby

Hi!

I am 12 weeks as of yesterday (YAY!) and have my n/t scheduled for Tuesday. I know they won't be able to tell the baby's sex from the u/s but a lot of you have said that your blood tests revealed the sex. I know n/t can't be done after 13 weeks and a few days, so figure you must not be that much farther along than I am! Is there a special test that you do to find out the sex or is it just that since they measure your hormone levels etc. they can determine it? Do I have to be farther along?

Thanks, mamas!

I may be wrong but i believe the blood test they give you with the NT measure the protein/plasma in your blood. Lower levels of certain proteins tend to be markers for certain genetic issues. The cfdna measures the fetal cells that are in the mothers blood stream. Its a more complicated test as they have to separate fetal cells from mothers.

  • The anatomy scan at ~20 weeks will tell you the sex.

  • Some genetic screening test can determine gender. but not all of them do and not all doctors offices will bother to screen for gender since theyre more concerned about screening for potential abnormalities. if you want to know the gender early find an elective ultrasound place that will determine gender at 12 or 14 weeks.

  • I got additional testing that revealed the sex because our baby has a high nuchal fold measurement. Otherwise we woukd've found out at the anatomy scan.

  • @kefttsc‌ I know the anatomy scan will tell me but I've read on here about a lot of people who found out the sex via genetic testing blood tests. I was just curious if that's universal.

@sweetdreamz6700‌ @HerHighness‌ @psychobutthead‌ thanks! Hopefully we won't need that extra testing and will just hold out until the 20-week a/s!
  • My point is that if you don't require genetic testing for any reason (AMA, high risk, etc.) you should just wait for your A/S.

  • @kefttsc‌ I'm doing genetic testing on Tuesday (n/t and blood tests). It's not required but we have chosen to do it. I've gathered from other posters that it's a more advanced genetic-testing blood test that tells you the sex.
  • Yes you are correct. The NT scan and the blood panel do not tell you the sex!

  • @kkleigh10‌ definitely. I'm not saying the sex is my priority by any means! Obviously, my priority with doing the screening is to make sure everything is okay with babe. I didn't even know until I started reading one of these boards that finding out the sex via genetic testing was a possibility. I was more concerned about getting the information and my husband not being there - and the anticipation, of course!
  • My OB prefers everyone to do the cell-free testing. He thinks its easier and much more accurate than an NT screening.

Also - neither an NT or a cell-free will be as helpful for MoM, and the genetic testing center won't tell you the sex.

  • I understand that you want to know all is okay with the baby and respect those that do genetic testing for that reason, but your original post was about wanting to know the sex.  I don't agree with it being done for that reason primarily - that's my point.  I know what the test is, OP.

  • My dr told me the sex at 12 weeks from The nt scan! He was 98% sure it was a boy! So yours might be able to tell if you ask :)

This is still unreliable, though. With my twins, both the tech and the MFM said they were as sure as anyone could be that one was a girl and the other was probably a girl, too. I had two boys.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • Just had my NT scan last Friday, and it included a finger poke blood test. The doctor was a bit concerned at the babys size given my due date, its a bit bigger than most babys at this stage. But then he looked at my 6 foot tall 250lbs hubby and figured that was why. He's considerably bigger than I am, which may cause concern for vaginal birth, but thats a topic for another thread. Anywho, he looked at what he called, "the angle of the dangle" given the angle, he says its 80% that we're having a girl! And given my MS today, I'd say he's right. But we'll find out for sure at the anatomy scan at either 16 or 20 weeks. My OB will do a prelim anatomy scan at 16 weeks, if its inconclusive, then we will have another at 20 weeks.

  • Ha! Only on the bump would this elicit salty responses. I'm still getting used to that about this place!

Two questions: what is MoM? And what's the difference between cell-free testing and the n/t ultrasound + finger prick I'm having?

    Thanks!
  • MoM is Milk of Magnesia, its a saline laxative thats ok to take during pregnancy. As for the difference between the two, I have no idea. However, I would assume that cell free testing is just a straight ultrasound? But I'm not sure. I had the NT scan + finger prick done myself. I wasn't told there were other options around this time.

  • Thanks @HerHighness‌ ! That helps a lot. I've heard all of that thrown around but had no idea how they differed from each other or from what I'm having done. I have a friend who did the panorama just because. It sounds like an expensive extra if it's not necessary!
