Occuipt Posterior OP Baby at 35 weeks

Hi, has anyone else had an OP positioned baby? I am now 35 weeks and baby is OP. Any advice on what I can do to position her correctly. So far I have been trying the cat pose, raising hips and legs while lying down, the medicine ball exercises etc. Has anyone tried this with success? Does OP mean that I definitely have to get a Cesarean?  Thank you!

So baby is head down, just face up? No, that does not mean you need a csection. When I was in labor they had me get on my hands and knees and sway back and forth (left to right) to try and get DD to flip. She did not flip, but we were still able to have a vaginal delivery. Also, keep in mind that LO has plenty of time to flip (or flip back if you do get her in the correct position). DD was in the correct position from my A/S til 3 days before my induction (39w4d).

  • You can definitely deliver a "sunny side up" baby vaginally.  I think the baby does have a harder time getting through, but many have done it successfully.  Like PP said, there are things they will have you do to try to get baby to cooperate.  But you still have plenty of time for baby to move around.  My second was definitely flipping back and forth in my stomach at 35 weeks.

I think there's a website called "spinning babies" (can someone verify) that gives you different exercises to do to turn a face-up baby?

Crawling on hands and knees can help, leaning forward on a birth ball, really any sort of forward leaning/hands and knees position. No reclining, slouching. Baby's back tends to go toward gravity, like a hammock, so since you want baby's back forward, lean forward.
  • Go to www.spinningbabies.com. There are a million and three resources there for positioning your baby correctly. My first was OP and I ended up with a csection but I think it's 30% of babies are actually born vaginally OP, so you will NOT automatically need a csection. I would start doing forward inversions right away, thats a good way to turn them. But the website will explain it all.

  • Also, DO NOT lean back on your couch or chair. Sit STRAIGHT UP, otherwise it automatically forces baby into an OP position. Sitting on a couch is about the worst thing you can do for an OP baby. Or in your desk chair, flip it backwards so your back is completely straight.

  • Thank you everyone for your comments. Feel so much better knowing you Mommies delivered an OP baby naturally, and thank you for all the tips!!
Baby is still OP today but I can relax a little now. :)
