PR: Question for 2+ Moms (Long, sorry)

edited August 2014 in Babies on the Brain
I might be able to already guess this and I'm dreading the answer a bit but.... my anxious mind needs to know the experience of others.

When you have two or more kids, is it pretty much a guarantee that if one gets sick the other one will too at the same time? Like I should just expect that will probably always happen? Has that been the experience of others here?  Or is it hit or miss?

I'm a little embarrassed to admit, that one of my really big anxiety triggers is when my kid comes down with a stomach bug.  Colds, other viruses I can handle confidently...but stomach bugs and/or vomiting will actually send me into panic mode.  I think the anxiety peaked because it wasn't too long back that my kid got hit with it literally 3 times in a row (separated by a couple weeks each time - lasting for several days each time), and it was just really effing stressful, especially since the 3rd time I was fresh in first tri with this pregnancy and had a really hard time handling the puke.  Now every time he says something like "I'm sick" (most the time to get attention because he's usually fine), my stomach will instantly go sour and I'll start freaking out inside...(I do have panic disorder so..my symptoms become physical)

I know... I feel a little silly whining about this, but ... this next baby is due in January, right in the middle of sick season and my DS goes to day care.  I feel like he is always catching every little thing.  I am paranoid that my baby will be getting sick just as often as he is, especially during that season... And I am mostly afraid of the dreaded stomach bug.

What makes it worse is I have to work from home when my kid is sick... and when I have my newborn I'll be working from home anyway at first, so... then I'll be home with TWO sick kids at once while also trying to keep my eye on emergencies at work?

What did I do to myself....

  • Woops, I just realized I posted this on the wrong board... although it's fine here too! Meant to put it on parenting, there's probably a little more traffic there...lol

Sorry to just pop up randomly here.

  • Mine tend to get sick back to back, so a 2 day bug turns into a 4-5 day bug.

Not a guarantee at all. My kids each get sick sometimes, and yes. Sometimes that translates to both getting sick, but sometimes it doesn't! I can't really tell why, but I will say, when one gets sick, we do our best to keep them separate (mostly impossible), change ALL the sheets everywhere in the house, wash water bottles/cups much more often, discourage sharing water bottles/cups, etc.
This.  Sometimes both get sick sometimes only one gets sick.  Sometimes everyone in the family gets sick and sometimes it's only one person.  We've only had one stomach bug since DS was born and both kids got it but were not sick at the same time.

God I just hate that stomach bug so much.... I had gone 10+ years without vomiting until the first time my DS got a stomach bug (later last year), and then my vomit-free streak was broken.

H managed to miraculously not get it, but DS had it for a whole damn week and I had one day of vomiting and a couple days of feeling like crap.

It is the worst... vomit can DIAF

  • I would say not necessarily a guarantee. My DD 1 is a robo child and rarely gets more than a minor cold. DD 2 gets sick all the time. Only occasionally have they both gotten seriously sick at the same time.

The bigger question is, if one (or both) kids get sick, will the parents get sick, lol. Because almost every time both kids have come down with something nasty my husband and I get it too. Which is awful. It's awful to have a sick whining husband to take care of when you're also under the weather ;)

  • My first kid gets sick pretty easily, but my second rarely catches it. If she does get sick it usually much more mild. I will say that diet has made a HUGE difference for me and my oldest in terms of how often we get sick and for how long. Basically I try to serve a lot of veggies and probiotics.
