I Love My MIL (this is not a joke)

MH and I snuck into Phoenix this weekend with the intentions of shopping all day Sunday and then having dinner with my ILs Sunday night. Today is our OB appt, then we will drive back home. MIL called while we were at BBB, updating our registry, and said that she would like to join us to look at all of the baby things. She is a neuropsychologist, so I had her help me find everything that will help little guy get the best leg up developmentally in his first year. Her insight was amazing! Besides raising four boys, she knew her shit and I trimmed down my list extensively! Then, to top it all off, she bought everything in our cart for us. I am still she'll shocked at how amazing she is. She also bought us dinner Sunday night. Baby stuff and food! How was everyone else's weekend?

  • That's so sweet of her! Nice to hear of someone getting along with their MIL :P and it sounds like she is super excited to be a Grandma!

  • My MIL is the best as well. I can never ask for anything more. She already got the crib and everything for her home when I was only 3 months. She is a nurse so she checks on me on a regular. I even took a vacation with her(yes, just us two) to hawaii. It felt like I was with my big sis. Not one dull moment. Club, drinks, beach and all. We are lucky compared to how crazy some are.
  • Can we trade MIL's. Please! Mine isn't as bad as some but she's still a pill. It has to be about her ALL the time. She is jealous of me for some reason. Odd, if you ask me as my relationship with her son is soooo not the same as a mother/son relationship.

I did luck out and get an awesome Aunt in Law(her sister) and she has been such a blessing in my life!
  • Mine has bee knitting away since finding out she's having a granddaughter on Friday (she had two boys) I didn't even know she could knit until this weekend :)
  • So glad you posted this.

I love my MILs too!  I have two, DH's mom and step mom.  My step-MIL is soooooo excited (it's her first grandchild).  She has already made a quilt and is working on an afgan.  She's excited to hear everything about the pregnancy and how I'm feeling, which is so wonderful, and we're becoming so much closer.  I talk to her whenever I'm worried that DH or friends are sick of my unending obsession with talking about baby.  My other MIL is great too.  She's not as excited, but is constantly offering to help, while always reminding us that this is OUR baby and all decisions are OURs.  It's so refreshing.

Having supportive, enthusiastic grandparents does help a lot! My folks are awesome, and already have insisted they will buy nursery furniture and carseat when I am ready to start making purchases. My MIL came with us to check out the registry and has already bought a few outfits and wants to buy the stroller. FIL and his wife are really great, too, just not quite as involved as the others, but they already offered to throw a shower with step-MIL's family (hosted by a niece I don't really know), which completely floored/touched me. I'm so happy our child will have amazing grandparents!

  • @rshamos that's awesome - definitely a blessing! Any good/simple neuropsych tips you'd be ok sharing? That sounds just fascinating - I stand there in the toy aisle and everything just looks bright and plastic and the same to me.
D14 November, because I am finally not on mobile, how I feel in 3rd tri:

Sure! Her main concern was overstimulation. The baby's brain gains more cells and connections in months 0-12 than the rest of his life. She was horrified by all of the toys that hang right in the baby's face (on the swing, on the bouncy thing, on the pack and play). She said the baby should be able to turn its head and find things that way. Mobiles are okay bc they aren't an inch from the face. Also, the best stimulation for a child is mommy time. Mom needs to be talking and playing games. She did not like the mats where the baby sits on the floor with all of the stuff over him. It was very interesting! She also said that the baby needs to learn to play by himself. Put some toys out and let the baby figure out what to play with. It recall reminded me of Bringing Up Bebe, a parenting book I just read. Hope that all made sense!

  • Would your MIL like to come baby shopping with me sometime? I am not above handouts or too proud to accept gifts from complete strangers. Oh, and I'm totally lovable when I'm not being a D14 bitch ;)

  • That's amazing! My mother in law is like that too! She's helped me get a few things for my nursery as well, like a nice big dresser, and paint for it, and even a nice (perfect!!) chair for the nursery. it was the one I wanted from the get go. <3

I also made a baby blanket to go with the marvel theme! Productive, and busy weekend.   :ar!

She probably would! She wants to start website bc she is so mad at what they are marketing to FTMs. She was yelling in the store at the displays. People probably thought she was an evil MIL yelling at me. :)
