3rd Trimester

Kind of early to ask this but...

I know this may seem like I'm thinking way too far in advance, but I can't help it.

So I live in NC, my family (parents, sister and her family, a lot of my extended family..family friends etc.) live in NM.  My parents and my sister are coming out around my due date to be here for when my little miss decides to arrive, which my due date is September 18.  I really want to be able to get back to NM after she's born so we can visit everyone back home, etc. and was thinking going while I'm on mat. leave would be perfect.  My husband is most likely going to Spain for work for 1-2 weeks towards the end of October and I was thinking this would be a good time to be around my family (my in-laws live here...but...I'd rather not have their constant help/attention).  I'm just worried that it's too early to be traveling with her.  I don't know specifics like when he's going, etc.  This is my first child and I know that regardless of what I do, I'll be super nervous travelling with her.

So I guess my question is...when would be a "good time" to travel with her?  It's too far to drive really so I'd be flying, there's no nonstop flights for this trip either...if I can't/don't make it out there while I'm on maternity leave, it may be more like February or so before I can get out there and it won't be for as long.
Thoughts?  Suggestions?

  • My LO is due on sept 16th. So we are quite close in due date. I live in a remote area and my DH and I plan to fly down to visit family in Toronto. I asked my dr when we found out how soon we could fly. He mentioned as early as a week old baby. If you are breast feeding.
We booked our trip for mid October and we plan to stay right up till after the holidays before we fly back home. We also got the information of where we can go to get the vaccinations while we are visiting families.
So if the LO is on time we would be flying when s/he is almost a month old, give or take.
I would talk to your dr, see what the doc says.
  • I waited until my son had his first round of vaccinations, like others mentioned. But sooooo definitely true about the baby being easier the younger she is. I flew for the first time with him at 8 weeks and it was a breeze because he slept the whole way.

  • I did this with my first (last year) and will be doing it again. I waited until DD was 2 months, we flew from NY to SF and stayed with my family for 1 month. I think I had done some searches and talked to my OB about when it would be safe for my baby to fly...
