Frustration at work *VENT*

Now I know this maybe be completely stupid to complain about but I'm just a little frustrated at the moment.  So as I'm sure a lot of you are dealing with this at work.  I'm really working a lot with the girl who is gonna be doing my work for the time I'm off.  Since there is a lot and some of it is very complicated we have been slowly working on stuff since about april/may.  I have started with all the easy stuff and now we are working on the more complicated stuff.  Now while I am frustrated i'm also completely understanding because this stuff does take some time to get, but at the same time a lot of it is pretty linked so once you understand the easy stuff the harder stuff isn't AS hard. But man I'm scared to death of leaving for Marternity leave and coming back to a big clustered mess.

Re: Frustration at work *VENT*

  • I hear ya! I'm a stock coordinator in a retail store and there is a lot of stuff that is easy and ties into the other things. But good lord it's not that hard. The person I'm training looks at me like I'm speaking a different language :/ ugh

  • When I was trained for my position approximately 2 years ago, I didn't take any notes. I've never been the type to need them. As long as it's explained to me and shown to me, I'm very hands on and can pretty much pick it up after one or two times doing it. That being said, my then boss retired. My new boss doesn't have a clue what I do or how to do it...and doesn't WANT to know. So, I have to train a girl to do it for the 6 weeks I'm out. It ALL revolves around Microsoft Access and Excel which she has NO concept of. Therefore I've been sitting here for about a month so far trying to type of very descriptive notes of how to do my job. To me, my job is almost TOO easy. But for her, I feel like it will be overwhelming and I'm SO scared to even take time off after baby! (I will, of course, just don't want to come back to a mess).

All that being said, I totally get where you're coming from! Hope they both surprise us lol :)

  • Ive been reminding my boss this whole time to get things slowed down for my mat leave. We are only getting our part time girl to come in a bit more so phones are answered. I work for a small office so it wasn't going to be a problem slowing things down for 2 months. BUT my boss seems to have a bad memory and he keeps on setting trial dates during my maternity leave and right when I come back. There is no way he will have everything he needs for those and I don't even feel bad. I can only warn him so many times. This place will be like a shitstorm hit it by the time I come back but oh well. His problem and not mine.

  • I am with you on this. My boss's plan to cover my leave is to have a new employee (starting end of this month) to cover. I work for the government so paperwork/computer system is a huge learning curve for new employees...plus training on his new job plus mine. I see disaster written all over this. I just keep telling myself...my boss's problem, not mine, but I agree...I don't want to come back to a gigantic mess.

  • @NinerGirl52 I had notes that I took from when I started (She just started in January) I gave her copies of all the things I do either on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, now I did go over my notes before I gave them to her and took stuff out that didn't needed to be done or added if needed.  .  Even when we started I told her she might want to take her own notes (she was just writing in over mine with hints about what stuff in the notes mean)  because she was getting confused by what I had written so it has felt like I'm explaing everything twice.

@AmandaRae529 All of my stuff is out of Excel too!  And I hope you are right and that they do suprise us!

  • What kind of job do you have where it takes 6 months to train someone to cover for you for 12 weeks?  That just seems crazy!

I still don't know what my boss's plan is for my maternity leave, but we try as much as possible to cross train and have redundancy, so there are a handful of other people in my office that can do my work - maybe not as efficiently, but good enough.  I work in financial reporting, and deadlines can get really tight, so it is important to have a contingency plan incase of illness or what-not.  And we are required to have all of our quarter-end and year-end processes documented.

  • @sj+cm131 It could be me and how I want to make sure that she can do it with no problems while I'm gone because our supervisor is completely worthless.

  • That sucks! I'm so type-a with that stuff. I want everything done a certain way, so I get it.

  • I had this issue when I left my last job.  My last month I trained my replacement and we were at each other's throats.  She was supposed to be my back up for the last year or two and it was blatantly obvious she hadn't known what she was doing that entire time.

Now I work for the government and so my duties will just be taken on by my co-workers in their spare time or on OT and we're all cross-trained in my department.

  • I hope the transition goes smoothly for you. It really sounds like you've spent a lot of time preparing, so that's good.

Me? My job is so freaking random and I don't think anyone understands what I do. Basically, I make shit work, put out fires, am on hand for "OH MY GOD THIS HAS TO BE DONE FIVE MINUTES AGO" requests, and generally fit square pegs into round holes. Thankfully my coworker is pretty much the same way, so I feel like he'll be able to pick up my slack when I'm on maternity leave.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't secretly wish everything was a complete disaster while I'm on maternity leave so they'll realize what I do and miss me. I haven't felt all that needed lately.
