STM's how did you swaddle?

We did the Happiest Baby on the Block class when pg with DD. Basically just learned the techniques and got a DVD with the class. The instructor taught us how to swaddle...with a doll and you know THAT comparison is soooooo the same ;)

I had seen Swaddle Me's in the store and bought a pack for dd. We tried swaddling w/ a normal blanket and we SUCKED. It never stayed and it just pissed me off. So we stuck with the pre-made ones.

My question is what do you do? I really don't like the pre-made ones bc the Velcro was so stinking loud I couldn't unwrap DD to change a diaper or feed her without full on waking her up. She's a light sleeper as it is but these were just so loud.

I'd like to try regular swaddle again but not sure. Any tips? And we did try many different blankets including the Aiden ones.

Re: STM's how did you swaddle?

  • I like the swaddle wraps. I can swaddle (I photograph newborns for a living and often wrap/swaddle for pics so I have literally swaddled hundreds of babies) but I prefer the easy wraps for when I'm half asleep ;)

I liked the Halo brand swaddle sacks for when he was really little because the unzipped from the bottom so I could leave the top part swaddled (no dealing with noisy velcro) and still have access to change his bum!

  • We tried A&A swaddles but they were just too stretchy and DS could escape. We loved them as blankets though. We got the best swaddle from flannel receiving blankets but will be trying out the woombie this time.

We even youtubed how to make a DIY miracle blanket out of 2 receiving blankets. (The one were it pins their arms down before you swaddle.) I literally cried putting it on DS. He needed his arms down but I felt like I was torturing him. My sister loved the Miracle Blanket though.

  • Lurking here, but umm, how long do you swaddle a baby anyway?

Curious since my youngest is 11 and I have forgotten everything! That and there's so many new stuff out there. :-/
  • I used a swaddling blanket with all of them. The one I used didn't have velcro or anything. But I was able to swaddle them with a regular blanket as well.

  • FTM here too, but curious if anyone has ever tried Woombies? They zip instead of velcro and I've read great things about them. That said, I've never tried it so not sure if they are as great as promised.

I tell any of my friends who are pregnant to get the Miracle Blanket. It was our saving grace. When we took DD to her first doctors appt at 4 days old we told the doctor how she wouldn't sleep more than 30 minutes at a time and she recommended the Miracle Blanket to us. We had never even heard of it before so DH went out and got it immediately and that night DD slept 3-4 hours straight. Those were the most glorious 3 hours of sleep I had ever gotten. I give them as gifts at baby showers, registered or not. No Velcro so you wont wake them up - I was sometimes even able to change DD without unwrapping it and she stayed asleep.

  • I was a RN in the nursery and NICU for 4 years so I became a pro at it. With DD I preferred a stretchier blanket and found cheap ones at target. My technique is pretty much like this diagram but on the first wrap over I make sure to wrap tuck the arm in the blanket to keep it at the side. Sometimes in the NICU we would double wrap too so that the babies wouldn't wiggle out and pull off their leads or IVs. DD loved being swaddled and we continued to swaddle until about 9 months.

  • Miracle blankets. One major plus to them is that they're all one size. A lot of the other swaddlers have to go up in size as the baby grows.

  • Thanks for all the tips! This is very helpful.

The hardest thing for me was finally getting a good wrap and then she wanted to eat. And everyone and everything I read said have baby skin to skin while nursing...and we had bf'ing issues and she would fall asleep nursing so they wanted me to tickle/rub keep her awake. Which meant no feeding in a swaddle. Then she'd poop and I'd have to start over lol

Alivia slept in 20 min bursts too so maybe a better swaddle will help. I'll ask the nurses to show us again.

  • The swaddlers were always too warm, so we did blankets. I was horrible and couldn't do it. Hubby made a perfect burrito every time. She also liked one arm out, so a sleep sack was hard to work with.

  • H is an absolute pro at swaddling- I've never seen a person work a receiving blanket like that man. My sister calls him the baby whisperer lol. We swaddled DS for .....7 months. Yea I know. Go ahead and judge. He loved it and would fall asleep immediately. We finally stopped when the grandparents started making jokes about him calling me from college to swaddle him.

  • Woombies are awesome!!! But any of the zip-up stretchy swaddles work pretty well. I also love the A&A blankets.
  • Exactly how @Krisx2‌ has shown. It worked best for us with the A&A blankets. DD hated having her arms confined so eventually we had to modify it to below the armpits.

I absolutely despised the velcro swaddles such a waste of money, she always broke free.

  • I learned the technique in the diagram that @Krisx2‌ posted in my Mommy and Me class. We used the a+a blankets.

  • ds#1 and ds#2 both hated to be swaddled. I tried having them swaddled for maybe a week and then gave up.

  • I swaddled all my kids in homemade flannel blankets. My biggest thing is hip healthy swaddling. Myself and my daughter have hip dysplasia, and too tight leg swaddling can exacerbate hip dysplasia. 90% of infant/childhood dysplasia is missed in well baby checkups, so it makes for good practice to avoid hip stressors in infants.

There are lots of videos and tutorials on hip healthy swaddling online (like here)  The biggest thing is to make sure baby is still able to freely move their legs up and out. So for my kids I wrap tight in the arms and leave the legs open.

  • Woombies are amazing!!! They hold tight enough, but still allow baby to move and stretch. They are not tight in the hips, so no issue there. I also love that they offer a transitional swaddle with snaps at the arms, so you can do one or both arms out. They were so easy to use. As soon as a zipped my son up, he knew it was bedtime. My woombies have been passed around to all my new mommy friends and everyone that has used them swears by them.

  • I used a blanket for 1-3. I became a pro with the blanket since that is what they did in NICU.

Then with #4 I received a used baby straight jacket. Those are awesome! Although sometimes the blanket still worked better. I did notice new ones were louder...  But my LO never woke because of that. Then again, my house is constant chaos, so baby is use to noises from the second it gets home. I have no clue on the brand, sorry. I'm to lazy to go dig mine out.

  • I loved the A+A blankets.  They stretch to get a nice tight swaddle.  I would fold almost in half, you don't want it tight around the hips/legs.  The nurses will show you how and then practice.  I hated the Halo & Summer Infant ones.  DD could get her arms out and it would bunch around her neck.  And the Velcro!

We swaddled until 4-5 months, when she started rolling over.  I tried cold turkey and she was up every 30-60 min.  We swaddled one arm out for a week or so.  Then both arms out, eventually no swaddle.

  • My favorites were the A+A blankets, but I had a Halo that was ok.  Like @AllTheTeaInChina, I didn't like the velcro that much and it bunched.  I'm debating on trying the A+A swaddle sack or just getting more blankets.

I youtubed videos on how to swaddle and we practiced with a stuffed animal, lol.  Then the nurse gave us a little tutorial.  It didn't take long before we were pros!
