Our Harry Potter Nursery

Hello everyone!  My wife and I are huge Harry Potter fans, and she recently gave birth to our first child (5 days ago, on Neville's birthday, missed Harry's by one day!).  When we bought our new house a couple months ago I approached her with the idea of making a Harry Potter themed nursery.  She agreed that it was a great idea, so I set out to make an extremely cool nursery based on our favorite literary character.  What followed was a several week project that had me pulling items from all over the internet.  From etsy, to ebay, to amazon, to b&m stores, to friends, and even into dumpsters (honestly... into a dumpster).  After our housewarming party, the general response to the room was "put it on the internet, it's sooo cool".  So I'm doing just that.  I'll try to explain how/what I did for each thing, and how it all came together.  I hope you all enjoy it as much as we do, it was definitely a labor of love.  Please excuse my pictures, they were taken on a phone (wish we had a dlsr with a wide angle lense, but we don't).

I'm extremely frugal when I can be, and for that reason we purchased the furniture in this room from Craigslist.  Total, I have about 40 hours, and $1000 into the room in it's entirety.  I feel that is reasonable, considering some people spend more than that on a crib and dresser.  Plus, it's way cool in our opinion.

This is the shot to the right when you walk into the room.  Next to his name, above the dresser, is a sizable area that we intend to put pictures on (I'm going to install a few of the electronic picture frames, so they "move" like they do in the movies)

These letters were from Michael's.  I wanted to actually pay someone to make his name in Harry Potter font, and I found them on etsy, but at $30 a letter, we decided against it.

Here we have a few potion bottles and Hedwig.  The potion bottles came from a friend, and I printed out labels for Veritaserum (truth potion), Amortentia (love potion), and Felix Felicis (liquid luck, good luck potion).  I filled them with glitter and such, thought it's hard to see in this picture.  I purchased Hedwig from "Alivans" online (it's the same place I got the broom, the wands, and the sorting hat as well).  I purchased the cage he's in from ebay, and it's actually an antique decorative bird cage.  Another theme that starts here and carries through the room is the fact that the shelf is made from Harry Potter books.  This was done with a floating book shelf from umbra.  You can use any books you want.

Here you can see a portion of the room.  The Chandelier was purchased from Lowes and replaced a flush mounted light.  I felt it really added to the ambiance.

The clouds are the ceiling were done with stencils from "my wonderful walls".  I did make some adjustments after they were painted, but they were fairly easy (you will have some paint leave the stencil unless you want a really light coat, or go over it a few times - I decided since I was doing so many clouds to just apply the paint thick, and go back and fix the areas where the paint bled). Again, sorry for the poor picture.

The decal I got from etsy.  There are a lot of options, but I went with wordybirdstudios.  She had the best looking decal for the quote we wanted, and her customer service is excellent (first one didn't go up well due to my error, and she sent me a new one for free.. awesome!).

The blanket was also from etsy, from ouradorablebaby.  It is so soft, has his name engraved, and the chevron pattern allowed us to find some bed sheets that matched. Bedding is by far the hardest part of all of this.  I have someone making us some sheets from a selection of fabric I was given by the same friend that gave us Hagrid (further down the post).

Here is a shot of part of the room.  The curtains were from bed bath and beyond.  Wife thought there were unnecessary, but I felt they really added to the room and helped it feel complete.

This decal was from amazon.  It came with the decal that is under Hagrid, too.

Here's our dumpster find... yes.. dumpster.  We had put a lot of stuff in storage when we were selling our previous house.  When we finally sold and were moving out of the storage facility, we went to throw some stuff away.  When the worker told us to take it to the dumpster we found this sitting inside. We guessed it was because of the crack in the lid, but we think it adds character.  It was already painted green, but I painted the bands silver and added the decal.  We were ecstatic with this find.  We had been looking for something for a while, and these things aren't cheap (it's a full cedar chest).

The wands were from Alivan's.  I bought two "oops" wands, hoping for a good one, and we got two that I thought were just fine.  The sign came from ebay.

Bee in your bonnet, Potter?  Saw this, and had to get it.  Purchased from Alivan's (such a great site for this project!).  You'll notice that the Prisoner of Azkaban is being displayed a little differently than the rest of them.  That's because it's our favorite book, so we purchased the display stand from umbra for that.

This really makes the room a bit over the top.  It was purchased from ebay, and it's a "easy release" wallpaper.  It was extremely reasonable in price.  We considered having someone paint a mural, but it was just too expensive to justify.  This was around $130, and I put it up in a few hours (after putting size on the wall).

The broom is from Alivan's (notice a theme here?).  I thought it was perfect!  What do you think?

And here you can see the other area of the room. The decal below Hagrid came with the house decals shown earlier.

This Hagrid statue was given to us by a friend of mine.  It's the type of thing you can't buy anymore (I saw one on ebay for $200).  It's from Hallmark, and we love it.  Things like this make the room a bit more unique.  Of course he's standing on Harry Potter Books (by the way, we bought all these books from a local resale shop for $3 each.  We have our own set, but didn't want to use them for this.  That said, these shelves don't damage the books, So we can change them out if we wanted).

Our light switch plate.  Purchased from etsy.  I found one I liked more after I ordered this one, but no reason to spend more money for no reason.
