Old wives tale...bow legs from standing too early?

Help me out here... I always thought this was an old wives tale, but an occupational therapist told me today that if you put weight on the legs of a baby by standing them up you are going to cause their legs to bow due to how pliable their bones, ligaments, joints, whatever are. She said no bouncers either ever. What do you think? Or know that I don't. Thanks!

My baby has slightly bowed legs but that's because of how he was in the womb not from him standing

That makes sense to me. Not the standing thing. I googled it and that was the main cause, but she was so opinionated about it that I thought maybe I was missing something.

  • Same as Vinny & we asked the pedi at 2 month appt if it was okay to stand him on our laps & he said absolutely.
  • I vote old wives tale. Sure if you left LO in a bouncer/jumper what ever for hours and hours each day, yeah I can see that being an issue, but normal people don't so I think all good.

  • I think bunk as well. DD1 was a 7month old walker, she weighed 17lbs. Her legs are perfectly straight but when she started out she didn't. DD2 was born with crazy bowed legs. They've almost straightened out. You tell me:
  • Our PT said a similar thing about bouncers/jumpers/activity centers, but she said it is okay once baby is bearing weight on their legs on their own (pulling up).

  • Thanks everyone! This makes me feel better. Now I just need to convince my husband that's its not true. He was freaking out last night and now doesn't want to ever stand her up. She likes to pull to standing and does it on her own. She bypasses the sit altogether. And her little legs look so cute and chubby when she does it.

@RedDawnsRevenge‌ Precious! Everything looks just fine to me.

@jellysparkles‌ That had to be so scary. I'm glad it all turned out ok.

  • At DS's 2-month appointment I had DS standing on my lap while we waited. When the pedi came in she said, "Wow, look at you standing!"

That was it, no mention of it being good or bad. :/
