Moms with outside babies: nursing and diaper changes

How do you do diaper changes in the middle of the night? Do you do before a feeding, middle, or at the end? I've been doing them first then nurse and change again if he poops. I don't know if this is working well for us though. He tends to fall asleep while nursing and I don't think he is getting enough because he does a short stretch of sleep. I'm thinking about nursing one side, change, nurse other. I just don't want him to stay awake after changing because he doesn't really have any wakeful periods in the night. So what do you do?

  • Change feed and put to bed. Unless I hear a really wet poop. Then I will change again, cuddle for a few and put her down. She goes back to bed pretty quickly.

  • Change, feed, sleep. I hate to wake a sleeping baby.

  • Do you feed swaddled? I like to feed in just the diaper but sometimes reswaddling her wakes her up after eating.
  • I have a very sleepy LO so I change her before we nurse which helps her wake up so that we can actually get in a decent feeding.
  • Ok sounds like I'm doing what everyone else is... Not going to wake him up in the middle and jinx myself.

  • Another question (sorry if covered elsewhere).. Does everyone always nurse both boobs? Sounds like several of us have sleepy LOs. I try to change and burp b/w sides but he still doesn't wake up or he falls back asleep as soon as he's on the 2nd one. How critical is it? Also any advice? I've tried to make him a little colder by undressing and sitting under a low speed fan. Also turning on brighter lights. None of these seem to work.

  • I always changed, nursed, then put back to bed, unless there was another messy diaper. My first wouldn't sleep for crap ever, but my second would stay asleep through the second change, if there needed to be one.

I also always nursed both sides, but that backfired because I rarely had any back stock. This time I'm thinking of nursing one side while pumping the other, at least until I have a good stash. Had anyone done this method?

I typically one do one side and if he wants more, I move to the other. Most of time he only wants one. Just be sure to start the next feeding with the other side.

  • I also change, feed, sleep.  When he was only a few days old and sleepier, I would feed, change, feed, sleep.  It would wake him up enough to take the other boob.    Now he's more awake, so I don't need to do that anymore.

My son took only one breast for the first few days, and then began to take two.  I find that if he only takes one, he won't stay asleep but wakes up to eat again, so I really try to get him to take both before I lay him down.

  • Change, feed then nurse. If she falls asleep after 1st side then i unswaddle her to wake up enough to continue feeding.

I never nursed both sides, with either of my kids. They both got plenty from one side. It just worked better for us that way. It didnt cause any issues with my supply.

  • Change, feed, cross my fingers and hope for sleep. After feeding I burp her and offer the other side, sometimes she is interested and sometimes she just snoozes.

  • Do you wait for LO to wake on their own to feed or wake them to feed? I have been just waiting until LO wakes to feed at night and during the day. I just want to do anything wrong. How do you get back stock? Just curious? My LO typically nurses from both sides and is 6 days old.
  • I always changed after feeding- at least for the first few months EVERY time he nursed, he pooped. So I didn't bother changing him before, it would've been 2 changes.

He was always a one-boob feeder, so he'd wake, nurse himself halfway back to sleep, change diaper, sleep sack and back to sleep. Sometimes I held him for a couple minutes, but in those early days the diaper change really didn't rouse him once he had a belly full of milk.

  • With my first, my husband would change her diaper, hand her to me, I would feed her, both sides and she would fall asleep.
