Late Term and Child Loss

Intro and Lactation Advice

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I found out in March that we were pregnant for the first time. I gave birth early Saturday AM at 22 weeks (Caleb had no functioning kidneys and therefore no amnio fluid and no lung development) via induction and my milk came in this morning. I'm trying to recover emotionally and physically and now my breasts hurt more than I could imagine! Does anyone have any recommendations to stop my supply ASAP? I'm wearing a medium support sports bra and taking 600mg Motrin every 4 hours. Also, anyone know how long this pain might continue?!

Re: Intro and Lactation Advice

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. Cold cabbage leaves seemed to relieve the pain but I don't think it helped lessen my supply. Only time helped with that.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. The hospital told me to wear a supportive bra and not let hot/warm water run over them in the shower. Ice packs and Sudafed came up in a quick search, though I've not tried it.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. PP have given good advice. The only thing that will made the supply go away is time and not stimulating more milk production. It took about a week for my pain and engorgement to go away. ((Hugs)). My milk coming in was one of the most difficult things - this painful reminder of what you should be doing.

  • I am so sorry for the loss of your son Caleb. I agree with the recommendations of the previous posters. ((hugs))
  • My son died of bilateral renal agenesis as well :(  I am very sorry for your loss. When my milk came in I wore 2 sports bras and took Ibuprofen as needed. The engorgement and pain lasted for about 4 days and then it gradually got better. Just keep them away from the warm water during a shower and try not express at all - will make the process go a little faster. ((Hugs)) to you!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  I took ibuprofin, sudafed and benadryl, used cabbage leaves, and avoided the water from the shower.  I doubt any of it really did much but at least it made me feel like I was doing everything I could.  It took about a week for my engorgement to go away but the pain started to subside after about 3 days or so (or I just got used to it).

  • Cabbage leaves for sure. I also drank sage tea and I think it helped to dry up my supply more quickly. You might have to buy it at a health food store (I bought mine at Fiddleheads).

  • *siggy warning*

I'm sorry for the loss of Caleb.

As for the engorgement, I wore 2 sport bras and ice them with ice-packs. It took about a week for the swelling to go down. I'm sorry you're going through this, hugs.

  • The sports bra helped me the most. I wore one as tight as I could get it. I'm sorry you are in pain. It's a cruel thing to go through after a loss. I remember being shocked by my milk coming in. It's like my mind didn't process that it would happen.
