November 2014 Moms

Failed :(

Failed my 1 hour; suppose to be less than 140 and I was 163.  I had GD with Sweet Pea but not with Peanut.  My OB was out of the office today but I'm going to call on Monday to see if I can skip the 3 hour and just be diagnosed with GD since I failed so bad and have a history.  Here's hoping.

Re: Failed :(

  • Ugh I'm sorry :-(. I hope you get it skip the 3 hour test.

  • That's a bummer. I don't have a history, was underweight before the pregnancy and currently 28 and still got GD. Grr!

  • @zengal

I have a very small home daycare (2 boys besides my 2) so it's hard to get away to even take the 1 hour test.  When I took it with Sweet Pea I had to lay down with a cool cloth on my head I got so nauseated by it.
  • Sorry, that's terrible.

  • Dang, I'm sorry :( seems like we have more mamas failing rather than passing. Stupid GD!
  • So what happens if you fail it. Then what??? I'm expecting to fail probly. I have insulin resistance already and have put on a lot of weight already with this pregnancy. I was just wondering what they do if you fail.

  • I'm sorry you failed! Hopefully you don't have to do the three hour. If I fail mine and have to do the next step (only a 2 hour here, thank god) I'd be so screwed. Good luck my dear!

I haven't had mine yet, but I've been researching because I have a family history of diabetes. If you fail both tests and are actually diagnosed with GD, you'll have to adjust your diet to cut down on carbs/sugars (though not cut out). Many people meet with a dietician/nutritionist.

The change in diet could be enough, or you may need medication. There is an oral pill you can take in some cases (my mom does this for her Type 2, and it's awesome), or you may need to inject insulin. You'll likely have to monitor your sugar levels several times a day.

Pain in the butt, but not earth-shattering.

This is what my research/prior knowledge is... Correct me if I'm wrong!

I know it would be hard to take the 3 hour test but wouldn't it be easier considering a lot of people fail the 1 hour and go on to pass the 3 hour, than doing everything you need to do once diagnosed with GD? All of the blood testing and special meal planning can be a lot to do in comparison.

  • Since the 1 hour is a screening test with a high rate of false positives, I don't think there is anyway your doc would let you skip the three hour.  I wouldn't want to anyway, even if it is difficult to find time to take the test.  Even with your history, there is still a decent chance you don't have it.

  • I was just talking to a nurse at work about this - she had GD with her first but not with her other two. She failed the 1 hour test with the other 2 kids but went on to pass the 3 hour test and all was good. So ya never know.
  • Lurking to share.

I failed the 1 hour test with a 187 (should be < 140). Had to take the 3 hour and passed each time point according to my OB.

I have had friends fail both and get a GD diagnosis with each kiddo, but a couple are like you who only had GD with one kiddo.

    GL with your decision.

  • @minibean your correct.  I was able to control mine with Sweet Pea with just diet.

3 hour scheduled for Wednesday at 8:15.  Going to be a long boring morning that day.
