Milk storage

Soo I'm just curious what everyone else's style is for milk storage. I'm new at all this and am trying to build a supply for when I return to work, as well as to have bottles handy in the fridge for those times that I'm out and it's easier to have a bottle/or hubby can feed. My doc told me I could add milk to already frozen milk bags so that's what I've been doing, but then I read that I shouldn't do that. What's everyone else's thoughts?

Re: Milk storage

  • Unless I know I'm definitely going to use it in the next few days, I pump directly into storage bags and they go into the freezer.  I don't add to a bag unless it's from the same day and had 1 oz or less in it to begin with.  If I pump that little, then I'll put it in the fridge, not the freezer, knowing I'm going to add to it in a few hours.  I'll freeze it after that.

I try to have 2-4 oz in a bag.  It's rare to need more than 4oz for now at a time so I don't want to have much more than that in a bag because it won't get used and would be a waste.  I also like to have different amounts on hand so if I use one of the fuller bags and baby still seems hungry, I've got a smaller one on hand to use too.

  • I keep about 6-8 oz in plastic storage containers in the fridge (2 oz each) the rest gets frozen in 2 oz bags. I wait until I have enough to fill a bag before freezing. I've heard not to add to already frozen milk but it's ok to combine chilled milk from separate pump sessions.

  • I use this as my reference point for storage. We are using the kiinde twist breast feeding system and pumping directly into the bags that attach directly to the bottle.

  • With all my kids they were only given a bottle if I was not around so either I was at work or on an errand. I would always have a bottle(s) ready in the fridge. For over supply I froze it in ice cube trays. Much cheaper then buying bags plus each cube is an ounce & if you store your bags in 4 oz (or whatever you use) there will be times you won't need that much (especially towards the end when weaning) & its a waste to dump it. It also thaws much faster & there were times when I'd be at the store & baby was home & hungry with DH & he could make a 2 oz bottle and calm the baby down until I arrived a few minutes later to nurse. Another good thing about doing it in 1 oz cubes is if you want to use it for diaper rash or even pink eye.
