Breastfeeding vs Bottle

Hey ladies!!!! I didn't breastfeed my son and now I feel guilty! I am 26weeks and 5 days preggo with my daughter and I am definitely wanting to breastfeed her. I have so many worries though...... Going back to work, what if I can't produce milk? What if she does not latch? I am nervous about all of it. I am reading a breastfeeding book and have talked to friends about it but I am still nervous!!!! What are your thoughts on this topic? New and experienced mommies please comment!!!

Re: Breastfeeding vs Bottle

  • I did not nurse my first two kiddos, but I did my third. It was very convenient and it worked well. I cannot nurse this time ( breaks my heart) because of my seizure meds. Just because you did not nurse, you shouldn't feel guilty. Take a class as previous comments suggest. Just remember, that there is always a chance it won't work and you shouldn't beat yourself up over it. Buy some bottles and all to be prepared. Being not prepared( incase breastfeeding does not work) will make it worse on you.

This Is second person who has posted twice. Not that I really mind but it has me all scrambled because I could have sworn I answered it already. Is this what they mean by pregnancy brain?? Anyways, I think it's the app making everything all screwy. Hope the kinks get worked out.

    Hm...

IMHO, breastfeeding is more of a physical thing than a mental thing, like riding a bike. The thought of taking a class or reading a book about it before having a baby sounds like taking a class with an instructor demonstrating how a person rides a bike. And you could read a book about bike riding, study physics and the mechanics of a bike, but until you actually get up there and try it-you've really gotten no where in terms of actually being able to ride a bike, right? And just like with bike riding, the first week or two might really suck. You feel like a total failure until next thing you know, you are doing it!

At the hospital where I delivered the first time, there was a nursing consultant. She trained me on the different feeding positions using my actual baby: the football hold, laying down, all of that. And she showed me what a proper latch looked like. Any time I had trouble, I could just ask for her. She was very reassuring.

It was a frustrating first couple of weeks. You have a couple challenges even if you are a pro-you have to wait for the colostrum to become actual milk. Before milk is shooting out of your breasts like a fountain (Yes, that happens, and yes, it is bizarre), there is a feeling of uncertainty as to whether your baby is getting enough nourishment. Secondly, the baby has to learn how it works too. A lot of times, the baby is just super sleepy and won't work for it! It can be really frustrating, especially if you are blaming yourself.

The first time is stressful, so just expect that it will feel hard at first because it is normal. The second time, I experienced the exact same issues, but I had confidence that I was doing what needed to be done, and that the rest was up to babycakes. So the stress was totally gone. It's that helpless "what am I doing wrong?" feeling that first time breastfeeders struggle with.

In terms of milk supply, that is like wishing you had a different hair color or were taller. It will be what it will be. Try to accept your body for what it is. Good luck!

PS. Sorry, I realized belatedly that I responded to the double post instead of the original post. Oops.
