Braxton Hicks contractions...

Is anyone else getting braxton hicks contractions already? Mine started about a week ago and I get them throughout the day. It doesn't matter how well hydrated or rested I am. They even wake me in my sleep at times.
I've been to L&D and of course I didn't really get them when there. My cervix is still long and they said I was ok and to monitor but boy this is really making me nervous that I am going to go into pre-term labor.
I see my actual doctor later today so we'll see what he recommends.
Just wanted to see if I am alone in this?! I know they are common. But it seems so early. I am 24 weeks.

Thanks ladies!!

Re: Braxton Hicks contractions...

  • I have actually been having them for a while- I would say as early as 19/20 weeks or so, so it's not early at 24 weeks. I get them a couple of times a day now (I'm 26 weeks), but they definitely don't wake me up at night, so I can see why that would be a concern.

If you've been to L&D and they said your cervix is long and you're doing well then I wouldn't be concerned. Mention it to your doctor and see what he says for sure.

I find I get them if I have had an especially long or busy day, if I've been very active, just after I pee, when I stand up from sitting for a while and when I have an orgasm :)

  • Like PP I have had them for a long time. I'm 28 weeks tomorrow and I am starting to get them more , but never in a repetitive pattern or enough to cause pain. Just a little uncomfortable.

It's definitely normal. You actually have them throughout your entire pregnancy just takes a while to feel them. If you've been checked I wouldnt worry about it :) I was worried at first too, but now I'm used to it lol. Just sit down and relax for a bit when you get them and have some water. Unless you are actually like in pain or you have them in a pattern and they are becoming more frequent I don't think you need to worry. My doctor said if I have more than like 6-10 a day then to get checked.
  • I have Been having them since about 18 weeks, a few a day usually. I have had days that I actually had them 5 min apart lasting 30-60 sec. But then after laying down and relaxing, I can't tend to relax well... they would go away. It's normal to have them, your body is getting ready for delivery :) as long as you are drinking plenty of water and they are not able to be timed or bleeding or watery discharge you should be fine.I would just keep your doctor up to date on it. I never had them with dd so I was freaking out every time they happened in the beginning lol
  • You can actually start getting them at 12 weeks (which I did last time) but you dont always feel them. Braxton hick contractions are extremely normal and they are nothing to worry about, at all. As I said i had them starting at 12 weeks last time and my daughter was LATE. Your fine, you dont need to go to the hospital or anything for them.
  • I've been having them for a few weeks. I really feel them at night when I lay down. My doctor is not concerned.
  • I have been having them for several weeks. Today I was having them almost every time I got up or had to go to the bathroom, but today was my first day at my new job.

  • I've been having them for weeks and they happen pretty much with any physical exertion or when I have a full bladder.

  • I have been having them since first tri.  (Nine frigging weeks.)

Water, rest and going to the loo help.   Climbing stars, walking up hills and carrying too much stuff make them worse.

  • Thanks girls for helping to ease my worries!! I appreciate your responses.
My cervix is doing ok and my doctor said to go in if I get 6+ an hour. I get them ALL day long at least one an hour so now I am just going to track. It's so distracting from work because it gets my head spinning :)
I think once I get used to having them so often it won't be as much of a worry...at least I hope I get used to it ;)
My cousin delivered her baby recently at 24 weeks...she woke up having contractions that couldn't be stopped. I think having that so close to home and fresh in my mind makes it worse.
I am glad I am not alone in this, but sorry that you girls are feeling it too! Hopefully it will make for easier labor for us all :)
  • Been having then since 20 weeks. I actually talked to my dr about the because I was getting pretty intense pain where my c section scar is. He said I was ok and that if I have 6+ In an hour to go in as well good luck :)
  • I've been getting them since around 15 weeks. I get them a lot. As long as they aren't consistent/timeable its nbd. If you get 4 in an hour after drinking water and laying down always call your doc/MW.
