  Seriously I have no idea. My oldest is only 3. I haven't thought that far in advance about these questions. Since he's only 6 I don't think the stork was that horrible of an answer. That may be because I don't have a better one though.

  I vote vaginalord. But the more serious answer I gave to a 4yo was that babies start out very very small, even smaller than they are now. And when they are that small they fit inside just fine. And mummies eat and drink and help grow the tiny babies inside them until they get too big to be inside. And when they are too big to be inside a mummy they come out and keep growing on the outside.   We also have "It's So Amazing!"- both are excellent books. FWIW, they discuss things like samesex couples and abortion in very gentle terminology, I doubt that will freak out most people here, but, goodness knows, there are some special Amazon reviews. Really, though, they've been great for getting the discussion going- it's definitely time to start talking by 6, IMO. We read a page here and there together, as they have questions, and the books are in his room, so he can access them any time he wants to.

  I told both girls the sperm & egg story, daddys sperm goes in mommy's egg (@ 6yos "how did it get in there" =s "we'll talk about that part later") & makes a baby. & then God gives baby their soul. Now I know thats an UO around here, but thats how we roll.

  Honesty is always the best policy when it comes to sex education. I don't know about you but I most definitely want to make sure my kids have accurate information. It can help to prevent "accidents" when teens don't fully understand how a woman gets pregnant or how STD's happen.

  DS1 asked this while I was pregnant with LO. I just said "Daddy put it in there." I think he thought it involved eating because of the whole belly thing...There wasn't too much follow up. We had more interesting discussions about how the baby would be born. He was convinced the baby was going to climb up out of my belly, hanging on to my throat and come out my mouth....I decided to let him go with that...
  
  He also thought that he had animal babies in his belly. He'd always have me feel his belly when the baby was kicking. It was actually pretty cute and we even bought little beanie baby animals and put them in a little basket for the day when LO was born so his babies could be born too.

  My daughter asked this question when she was 5 and in pre-kindergarten.  I distinctly remember because she was sitting on the potty and I was so caught off guard.  I said that when mommies and daddies love each other and are ready to have a baby, daddy gives mommy the sperm to fertilize the egg which grew into the baby and then basically walked away with her saying "Mommy! I did NOT Have this information!"  It was hilarious.  Luckily if you stick to just what they ask and not go beyond it, often that is enough.  That's the advice I keep getting from her teachers, answer what is asked and only what is asked, or ask why they want to know because sometimes what we "hear" is not really what they are asking.  I was terrified she'd ask follow-ups but so far at 6, she's been content with that.
