12 Hours in 12 Weeks - for BF babies?

Has anyone heard of the 12 Hours in 12 Weeks book/method and thinking of trying it out? I'm curious, as a few people I know swear it worked for them, but I started to read it and seems to be a little more geared toward FF babes. Wondering if any breastfeeding moms have tried it, or thinking of trying it.

Re: 12 Hours in 12 Weeks - for BF babies?

  • I am thinking of trying it.  I agree, it's very geared toward FF babies and I am breastfeeding.  I will probably follow the main principal and work under the assumption that baby receives the same amount of breast milk for the same amount of time.

  • I'm not familiar with the book.  Based on a quick google search, it seems similar to what we follow in our house.  We use Moms on Call.  DS was EBF until his first birthday and was STTN by 8 weeks using their methods.  We've been following it again for DD (also EBF) and for the last 3 nights she's been fed at 8:30pm and slept until 5am, 5:40am, and 5:30am respectively.  Not 12 hours, but she's also only 7 weeks old.
  • @jnnfrrose6‌ I bought the moms on call book this past week and we are going to start using their schedule this weekend. DS will be 4 weeks on Monday, and we are hoping to get him on a routing before I head back to work. How flexible are you with the times suggested in their schedule? Do you pretty much follow it to a tee or allow for wiggle room? Also do you swaddle and use the white noise? DS hates to be swaddled so I'm wondering if I should just keep trying it until he gets use to it or just skip that part of the book. Sorry for all of the questions, I've just heard great things about their book, and am anxious to start working on it! Tia for any help!

I used this method with DD who was BF until about 10w. I would say by 14w she was sleeping 8-8. I kept with the schedule for her first year and it saved us both. I didn't feel like DD was starved at any point.
We escape proof swaddled her and used white noise. We will do the same for this baby.

    To answer your questions:
I follow the times pretty closely.  I may be off by 5 min on either side, but I try to keep to the schedules as outlined.  With DS I did tweak it a bit once I was back to work, but that was to accommodate my work schedule and the schedule with DC (though they were good about keeping him on schedule).  The schedules really work for us because I know when DD will be eating and napping so I can plan my day around it.  Sometimes she'll be fussy before it's "time" for her to eat, but it's for no more than 30 mins and I can usually soothe her by just holding her.  If I can't, then she may eat a little early, but not much.  Growth spurts are of course a different thing and I will feed more often then, but I really haven't had to do that more than on one or two days.  There is a Moms on Call app as well that can help you with the schedule and give alternatives if necessary.  You can also set it up to give you reminders for the schedule.

We definitely swaddle and use the white noise machine.  You can find a video on youtube of their method (we also had an in home consultation so I got to practice with them), but I find the SwaddleMe's much easier to use.  I wouldn't give up on the swaddling yet and don't be afraid of it being too tight.  The tighter the better.  You're trying to prevent them from startling awake.  The noise machine is helpful too because it covers up the little noises LO makes.  It is a signal to LO that it's sleep time and you will still here LO crying over it.

I really can't say enough about Moms on Call.  It's something that has been great for our family and given me a sense of control on our lives.

We also use Moms on Call and I echo all of these sentiments!! DD is 6 weeks, goes to bed at between 9-930 (she takes an 8:30 bottle but takes her time with that one) and sleeps till at least 5 at the earliest. It's fabulous!!
  • @Heather100612‌ @jnnfrrose6‌ thank you so much for the feedback! Today is day one of working to get LO on the schedule. Aside from doing the noon feeding a bit early, it's worked great so far. Hoping tonight goes well. I will definitely keep trying with the swaddle!

My baby was definitely not a fan of the swaddle (she used to scream through the process) but she's much better now :) and now she knows white noise and swaddle equal sleep, so her naps are great too!

I agree four hours seemed like a bit much for a BF baby. I'm doing a modified version, with 5 day feedings 3 to 3.5 hours apart. We still have two night feedings, but he can often sleep a 4-5 hour stretch now and his second night feeding lasts only a few minutes so eventually I hope that one will taper off. Next challenge is dealing with night engorgement! Argh.
  • I haven't read much about either method, however for the past week I'm been having some success with having my 5 week old sleep from 10:30/11 to 5:30/6 ... So basically a good 7 hours. And then I'll put her down again from 6:30/7 to 9:30/10.

I'm nursing so I basically just feed her when she wants it during the day. Usually it's 1.5-2 hours between feedings and she's been having more and more awake time. I try and eat/play/sleep like others have mentioned but sometimes she'll feed and then pass out for an hour or so... Once it gets to 8pm I feed her and then try to hold her off and keep her awake until about 10/10:30 where I get her ready for bath/bed. I nurse her in the nursery with white noise/swaddled and put her in her crib after she's nursed for at least 30min.

I'm going to slowly try and up the bed time and try and get her to sleep from 9 to 6.
