Anyone not introducing milk?

I'm a vegetarian, though not vegan. And don't drink milk. I have no plans to give milk to my LO once we wean her from BF'ing...I've done a ton of research on this and there seems to be no issue with not giving your baby milk from a cow. Even goats milk. Is anyone else not planning on feeding their LO milk?

Re: Anyone not introducing milk?

  • It's not necessary. DH loves cow's milk but I rarely drink it because I prefer almond milk and coconut milk. So I won't be giving DD much (if any) unless she wants it. I grew up only having milk in cereal, since my mom didn't like all the hormones in cow's milk (among other things).

  • I haven't bought cow milk in 3 years and definitely will not give it to LO. We will stick with almond and coconut milk. We just don't do dairy at all.

  • Glad to know I'm not the only one not planning on introducing milk. It feels like I'm bucking the system...since all you ever hear from day one is milk milk milk. But I haven't had a full glass of milk for almost 15 years...we're team almond milk here :)
  • We only have almond milk in the house so I won't be buying LO regular milk. The more I read about cow's milk the more skeeved I am.
  • I think we will skip cow's milk too. The only problem is almond milk doesn't have much protein (1g) so I will have to make sure DS gets it from other sources.
  • We haven't decided. If we do cow milk, it will be fresh from a friend's grass-fed, free-range, hormone-free cow. May do almond milk instead. Probably depends on the price of each. Hubby and I aren't milk drinkers, and ds wasn't until recently - he's starting to go through puberty and I think his body is craving the protein and calcium. Will probably just put him on whatever we decide for dd.

  • For the record, I love milk. We drink organic stuff here, mainly so I can enjoy chocolate milk and cereal. I also buy rice or almond - if my tummy is getting too upset (since I have an issue to dairy). BUT, I still won't be giving it to LO in the capacity people used to/do. She can have some milk (goat to start, organic of course) but she won't be having bottles of it a day - no way.  They can get proteins, fats, vitamins etc etc from many other sources other than milk.

  • Ugh, so I was just looking into non-dairy alternatives (you guys got my wheels turning), and it looks like the biggest issue is that littles need a lot of fat for brain development, and they usually get it from breast milk/formula, and non-dairy subs (even coconut milk) just don't have enough fat, but whole cow's milk does.

Anyone heard of this?  I didn't find it on an extremely reputable source, but the logic makes some sense to me.  I can't imagine that they get that much fat from actual food that they eat, at least not on a consistent basis.  But then again, I've never had a 1 year old before.
This is what I wonder too.

No cow's milk here as well. We'll meet her dietary fat needs through avocados, olive oil, nut butters, and butter. Pretty much the way my husband and I already eat. When she is older and is eating cold cereals I'll let her have organic cow's milk if she wants it. If she's anything like her momma she won't touch the stuff. I hated it!

All of this for us too.
  • My DD has been allowed A glass of milk since she was young. I don't agree with just filling kids up with milk. I will follow the same rule for LO after he decides to wean, which I'm hoping won't be for another 16 months or so.

My SIL lets her 3 year old have a baby bottle 24/7 full of milk. It grosses me out. One day I saw him eat watermelon and drink milk only the entire day. She said thats normal for him. I feel sorry for all of her boys because they have so so SO many health issues.

Uh I told DH I don't even want LO drinking from a bottle once she turns 1! If she can hold it herself she can use a sippy cup.
I told DH the exact same thing.
  • We'll do whole milk at a year. We did that with DS1 and he is now on skim milk at 4 1/2. He gets a small cup of milk with breakfast and dinner. Most of the milk at our grocery store is hormone free. I don't think it's that hard to find organic and hormone-free milk, if that's important to you.

  • We will not be using it as his main source of calories because I plan to still BF for a while but I will let him have a cup here or there like my older kids do.

  • I'll be giving milk. I would like to think in a perfect world toddlers eat well rounded nutritious diets, but it know that's not always the case with picky eaters or kids that eat one bite and claim to be full. Will she be getting bottles full multiple times a day? No. But I like milk, my husband loves it, and more than likely my kid will consume her fair share.

    Same here.
  • Good, sounds like there will be lots of milk left for me. :P

  • We'll be doing whole milk after a year old.  My twins got a bottle of wcm before they went to bed and first thing in the morning until they were a little over 2.  I wanted to drop the bottles earlier, but they refused to drink milk in any other receptacle besides their bottles and we weren't ready for them to quit drinking milk since they weren't very good eaters. Hopefully this LO isn't so stubborn.
  • We do whole milk at 1. We do limit the intake and we do sippy cups for milk, not bottles.
