Present for Nurses/Midwives/Docs after delivery?

I saw this pop up on another board and was curious to see if anyone had or is planning to bring little thank you gifts for the midwives, nurses or doctors that help in delivering your baby (or babies).

It seems like a nice gesture, but being a FTM, didn't know if this was standard or a weird thing to do.

Re: Present for Nurses/Midwives/Docs after delivery?

  • I didn't with my last but it does sound like a nice thing to do.  But I'm sure it will be the furthest from my mind.  I might get my mom to make her famous PB fudge and let her bring it to the nurses station.

I did travel size bottles of lotion for the nurses station, we were there for 5 days, which is probably why...if I'd been in and out in 1 day I don't think I would've thought to do anything.

  • I hadn't thought much about doing this. I did take cookies & cupcakes along with a card to my RE's office thanking them and announcing it was a boy :)

I'll have to ask my mom for ideas on this, she works at the hospital I will deliver at.

  • I did not bring gifts, but since I had a scheduled c/s I baked cookies and muffins the day before and brought them, and offered them to dr.s and nurses who came in the room, and sent some to the nurses station. They really appreciated it, and dh, myself and family that visited snacked on them, too.

  • Hmm.. never thought about this actually. But what a sweet gesture :) I will definitely have to think about this one. I'd probably just do some cupcakes or cookies. Honestly, I'd probably just go buy something lol! Idk if I'm gonna want to be baking and what not for a bit lol.
  • I didn't do any type of gifts with DD. I did however make sure to thank each of the nurses who were nice and helpful before their shift was over. Some of the ones I experienced were major bitches and just got attitude from me.

That's what I don't want to happen. Some nurse I hate (if they are rude) eating all my damn thank you cookies. Lol

DH ran out and picked up a big tray of bagels and spreads and a box of muffins and left them for all the staff. It was really sweet of him.

I was going to page you @lissydee‌ if you hadn't commented yet. Last time I didn't understand just how awesome some of my nurses would be, and didn't think about it til I had dd and was too much in zombie land to bring something back to thank them. Besides cards and food, do you have any other suggestions of good presents for the nurses? Was there anything memorable/creative/especially enjoyed someone brought as a thank you? Including food really, but I'd like to have something special ready for the staff.
honestly food is plenty.  As are TY notes/card/pics of your kids as they grow.  Oh and coffee.  A big ole basket of Kcups always goes over well on our unit!
These are great ideas. Thanks @lissydee!  I wrote a card to my awesome labor nurse last time but want to include everyone this time as well.

  • I had no idea this was a thing?  I just figured it was their job and a nice verbal "thank you" would suffice?

@MrsG1019 some of those are good ideas too...but I would pass on the hand sanitizer (its all over on the walls of the unit and individual pumps in our stock room) and maybe the pens?  I know that I am particular about the pens I use, as are most nurses on my unit (its a weird, OCD thing).

Gum and candy are good though!

Ha! Good call! I'm the same about my pens .. So I can see that! Thanks for the feedback!!!! That just leaves more room in the bag for candy ;)

  • I suppose if I had a close relationship with anyone or knew who would be present to deliver my baby I would think of doing this. I did have amazing nurses help with DD, but sadly any OB care around here is far from personal. The doctor who was present through the majority of my labor passed me off to the next 20 minutes before she was born. The nurses stayed.

    They deserved cookies.
  • I never even thought about doing a gift but I definitely will now! Good thread :-)

It's certainly not required, and I don't think doctors or nurses expect it, but after the above and beyond personal care I got from a few of the nurses with dd I wish I had had something extra to offer them. When a nurse goes above and beyond it makes a HUGE difference, and I think thanking them in advance for their work can only help make their day better, which makes the delivering woman's day better too.

This time I'll be at a different hospital, where SIL just delivered her baby. Those nurses were amazing and saved her from an unnecessary cs, and were the best nurses I've ever heard of/observed. After the trauma of my last birth I want to come into this one with the nurses on my side, as well as thank them for the care they offered my SIL.
  • I sent a card and ds birth announcement.

  • I gave my OB (she delivered both my boys) a basket from bath & body works with lotions & candle & a box of pumpkin spice kcups lol she always had that coffee and we talked about products a lot. She loved it! I plan on doing it again. And for the nurses we did send a thank you card with the picture of the team who helped out.

Just going to throw my two cents in here, food is pretty much always amazing and appreciated in all it's forms. I have sent a lot of baked goods and home made dinners etc to the hospital for my husband and his coworkers and dishes always came back empty. He has even come home with good he "found" and doesn't know who brought it in. No stranger danger for food!
Awesome! I love baked goods from others.. But just wasn't sure if hospital professionals has a weird thing against eating homemade products. Off to go google some yummy baked goods ideas!
