Babies on the Brain

any nurses/doctors on board? advice!!!

I will be bringing my DD back to the doctor tomorrow because she fell off her bed and broke her clavicle bone last night.  Poor little one is in so much pain and is absolutely miserable.  Long story short, the doctor did not recommend a sling because she is only 2, but did suggest I let her wear two t-shirts, the second one as a sling to tuck into her pants.  I'm utterly confused on how to do this and he did not show me even though I asked him to.  Basically he said since I did not bring two t-shirts so he couldn't show me.  (I had a dress/pajamas in the diaper bag for her!) I plan on going back to the office tomorrow with t-shirts in tote so he can show me how to do this! I did write on the 24+ month board as well for insight.  I'm just trying to figure out how to keep her comfortable for the night because she accidentally keeps moving her arm and starts crying because of the pain.  It is breaking my heart.  TIA!!!

  • Can you wrap her arm to her chest using ace bandages? Then put her shirt on?

  • *not a doctor* but would you pull the second shirt over her head but only put the good arm thru the armhole. Then tuck the bottom of the shirt into the waistband? Or do you have an ace bandage or scarf you could use to wrap around her body, keeping her arm at her side? Sort of a modified one arm swaddle?

  • Sounds odd.  My nephew broke his clavicle (thinking he was John Cena) and they gave him a sling that went around both shoulders to keep them straight.  It seemed to eliminate most of his pain.  However, he was 5-6 when this happened.  I just can't imagine why there would be nothing they could put on her to at least minimize the movement.  Not sure how a tshirt would work unless it was tight--but even then it would be painful to put on and remove.  Poor baby!  I hope she gets some relief soon.

  • Thank you all!!!  I called the doctor and we did an ace bandage to keep arm in place and then put a t-shirt over it so she couldn't mess with it. (DD wasn't cooperative but DH and I got the job done!!)  I really appreciate all of your answers/support.  Between the two week old and my two year old, I think my brain isn't working anymore.  :) Thanks again!!!!
