Anyone else Rh negative

Hi -
I'm a FTM and awhile back my doctor told me that I am Rh negative. She told me that later in my pregnancy I may need to take shots and have more bloodwork. At the time when she was telling me this I was only 7 weeks pregnant and didn't think much about what she was telling me. Anyone else Rh negative - what did your doctor tell you? Did you have more testing done?

Any input would be great!

I am. The only thing I was told is that I'll get the Rhogam shot at 28 weeks and if baby has + blood type then I'll get another shot after delivery to make sure my body doesn't produce antibodies.

I'm Rh negative and she told me there are 2 shots (I think...wasn't paying attention) 1 later in pregnancy and 1 in the hospital.

I am, I'll have to get the shot at 20 something weeks and I also had to get it at the ER when I had a bleeding incident at 16 weeks. It's just a shot in the butt, burns like crazy for a second but otherwise it was a piece of cake!

Thanks for the responses - I think that's what I pretty much heard from the doctor as well. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Sometimes I feel like my appointments are short and rushed. Then I'm busy processing all the information for days afterwards. I guess we are all due for this shot soon. I'm 21 weeks now...

I'm RH- and I've had a ton of the Rhogsm shots of the years. Normally you just get the shot at 28 weeks and then after the baby is born if they have a different blood type.

However, if you have any bleeding before that, you should get a Rhogam shot right away. I had bleeding in the 1st tri with all my pregnancies so like I said, I have gotten a bunch!

I'm RH neg as well. Yes you should get the Rhogam shot around 20 something weeks then possible at delivery. I got the Rhogam shot in my 1st trimester due to bleeding. They provided me with a card stating I received it & expires in 4 months so I believe I should be getting another shot before I deliver then again after I deliver depending on the baby's blood type. All worth it if it means I get to meet my LO.

Me too! I had some bleeding around 18 weeks and have already had a shot I am still set to get one at 28 weeks and then anytime they feel blood could be mixed. It's not biggie. The shot doesn't hurt but I had to get it in my tushy :-( lol

I'm RH negative too. I got a shot at 28 weeks and then since my son was + blood type I got another shot during my 2 day hospital stay. No biggie...but I think I do remember the shot being in my butt area and was a little painful.

ditto what everyoone else here said. i had the shot somewhere in the 20's of my last pregnancy, then during my hospital stay after baby was born. the dangers of not getting the shot, are not just fertility problems, but the death of baby in utero. before the rhogham shot was available, my great aunt lost a pregnancy due to this problem.

I was told 28 weeks too by my Doctor. That will be a big appointment with the shot and the glucose testing.

I'm RH negative I found out after my first miscarriage, you have to have the shot at 28 weeks and again after birth. I also had to have the shot with this pregnancy after my amnio and again at 19 weeks when I went to the ER for bleeding.

I am as well and like everyone said its around 28 weeks. But my dr. must like me because I get mine in my arm, I dont think it hurts too awful. Tetanus I think hurts worse than the Rhogam! (Which I have to get this time since mine is about to expire and I need the whooping cough vaccine :-S )

Me too. I was freaked at first when I found out. But the ladies on here assured me that It is pretty normal. So felt way better.
I didn't even know I had negative blood till then. Lol.
But everything will be great. :-) stay positive.

There apparently is a new test the ob can order that tests for the baby's blood type and if the baby has negative blood as well, you don't have to get the rhogam shot. My ob says they're doing it because there's a national shortage of the medicine. Anywho...maybe that's the test?

I just remember one shot, it's quite possible that I got another in the hospital but things were a little blurry at that time.

I am too. The explanation I got was that if my baby's blood type is different than mine, I might produce antibodies that attack it...or something to that nature. They haven't told me exactly what shots or meds I might need to have later on; we'll probably discuss that at the next appointment.

I am RH negative and like others I get a shot at around 28 weeks. I kind of figured I was RH negative since one of my sister's is negative as well. I was pretty sure I was 0-. If you have vaginal bleeding at any time you need the shot right away as well.

Ditto what others said. Although it won't cause fertility problems if you don't get it. Basically your body will develop antibodies and will attack any future children you have. I've tested positive with anti d antibiodies twice now and I have to get blood drawn at each appointment to make sure my titer hasn't changed.

So you will get a shot at 28 weeks and again in the hospital. Honestly it's better to be safe than sorry especially since not getting them can cause mental issues anemia and much much worse for subsequent babies. If this is your first baby, these shots are for future pregnancies.

So like a lot of ladies on here ... I'm also RH negative. I remember my doctor saying that I'll have to get a shot around 28 weeks. That's about 5 weeks away for me. From what I've read from other ladies, I'm not looking forward to getting a shot in the butt. Especially if it hurts and I then have to go to work and sit all day. Lol. But it's necessary so I'll take the shot however it needs to be administered. Good luck!

I am RH negative and got a shot at 16 weeks because I was spotting, I will get another at 28 weeks and possibly one at birth. With my DS, I had one at 28 weeks and didn't need one after birth because my DS is -. It isn't a big deal, I didn't even think that it hurt and didn't affect me sitting or anything the rest of the day. Good luck!
