DC lunch ideas

LO is starting dc on Monday. I need to send in lunch for her but I don't know what to send. At home she eats whatever I have. Avacado mash with tomatos and bread and butter or macaroni, tomatos and cheese, sometimes soup or a little chicken patty. What do you guys send in for lunch? They don't have a microwave so id have to send in a thermos of something warm. I'm lost. Help!

Also, the paper work says that they provide an am and pm snack but when I asked they said most parents send their own snacks but if the kid doesn't have a snack they will provide. So should I send in snacks?

Re: DC lunch ideas

  • For lunch I send lo with a small container of cut fruits, a sandwich (or pinwheels - I use crescent dough and make cheese, spinach or peanut butter pinwheels for the week sometime), some cheese cubes and crackers. For sandwiches I buy slider buns because they're the perfect size and those are either jam or peanut butter.... Sometimes ham if we have it. I have made a quick cold pasta salad on occasion too for her.

  • Snacks - our dc provides snacks. Maybe send in a snack or call and ask them to clarify if they for sure provide snacks.
  • @KMRR86‌ do you cut the sandwich into bit size pieces?
  • I get little pita pockets and put chicken salaf, tuna, or peanut butter and bananas. I also cut veggie burgers into bite sized pieces. She likes pasta salad or ravioli. I also do cut up fruit and veggies with hummus or cottage cheese, cheese and crackers, yogurt.

  • We can't send PB to DC, so you might want to check on that. I send cold pasta salad with lots of veggies, paninis (he eats them cold but they stay together. I send chicken and veggies and cheese. Really, I just do leftovers, more often than not. He eats cooked meat cold, so it is no big deal.

  • Since it's just a small slider bun I cut it into 4 pieces. @Clyde013‌

@martyn17‌ how does LO eat the hummus or cottage cheese?

    I feel so clueless!
  • We don't do dc, but I usually send lunch to my moms for the girls. Our best hit is a mix of shredded chicken, broccoli, brown rice and cheese, all mixed up and served together. Both girls (almost 4 and 1) love this and will eat it well. I usually make it up on Sundays and sent it for the week (all 3 days). It also freezes well if I make too much.

A few different ways.  Sometimes I make little cracker sandwiches so she can feed herself.  But often with the hummus I will just send it with dippers (usually raw veggies) and her teachers will sort of help her.  For the cottage cheese, I normally send it with cubed fruit (like melon) and she self-feeds the fruit and her teachers help her eat the cottage cheese with a spoon.
