Crib sleeping questions

Hi mommas! I searched and couldn't find what I was looking for so hopefully this hasn't been beaten to death.

Tonight was day 1 of transition from RnP to crib! Boys are 4 months old today and were growing out of the rock and plays. They did f.a.n.a.s.t.i.c! My questions are:
-what do you do if they both wake up hungry (&cannot hold their own bottles)?
-when one does wake up to eat how do you feed them? Pick them up and feed? Lean over crib and feed?
-when should they be getting to the point when they don't wake up for a feeding? Aka, how do you know when it is hunger vs habit? Is that something you "train" out of them or does it just happen?

Thank you in advance!

Re: Crib sleeping questions

  • I always took the boys out of their cribs for feeding. By 4 months DH and I were taking turns tandem bottle-feeding them (they got up 1-2 times a night at that age....we did one up both up, but noticed that they tended to wake up at the same time anyway). We used to lay them on a blanket on the floor in their Boppies and feed them that way. Then I'd burp them one at a time.

I took their lead when it came to dropping night feedings. They got to a point (5/6ish months?) when they would wake up once around 4 am for a bottle. They started sttn consistently around 6 1/2 months and once that happened, if one did wake up in the motn my first strategy would be the pat the back/tummy to soothe them back to sleep thing, then try rocking a little, and then bottle as a last resort.

HTH! Glad the crib transition went well!

  • Hi lady! Congratulations on a good transition to the cribs! We still do one up both up at night so when one wakes up I pick them up and prop them on my pillow and get the other up and do the same. I hold both bottles so they can eat at the same time, then burp and put back in the crib. The whole thing last 20 min. As far as your 3rd question that's a difficult one and you're going to get a ton of answers. You can let them grow out of it or you can train. One controversial but popular way is to use the Ferber method. I *think* that's what we might doubt I'm not sure yet. Either way, it's recommended you don't start until around 6 months.

  • Thanks, Ladies!  I am glad to hear your experiences.  I don't mind feeding them when they want it, so won't try to train them out of it, mostly because I have to wake up and pump anyways (Selfish, much?).  But I will be taking them out to feed them now.  I had no idea it could lead to ear infections @jumpingbeanx2!

I just didn't want to take them out and then have a meltdown putting them back in when they are done eating, but if that is the best way then I will do it.

Appreciate your time and experience sharing!

  • -what do you do if they both wake up hungry (&cannot hold their own bottles)? - I have a bed in their nursery and I use one boppy and my leg and feed both.
-when one does wake up to eat how do you feed them? Pick them up and feed? Lean over crib and feed? Pick them up and feed.  At 4 months, feeding while laying down flat could cause ear infections.
-when should they be getting to the point when they don't wake up for a feeding? Aka, how do you know when it is hunger vs habit? Is that something you "train" out of them or does it just happen? Every baby is different.  Mine slept through the night until they began teething.  Now at 9 months, I have one that sleeps through the night, and one that wakes up once or twice a night still.
