Developmental delays

What causes developmental delays? DS is not super behind, but his pediatrician is concerned about his speech and some other issues he is having. I have to call him Monday, and I want to be prepared with what questions to ask ahead of time. We are getting the impression that DS is not doing stuff simply because he is ignoring us, not that, for exam, he does not know where his nose is. He has had a bit of speech regression, but since his well check last Friday, seems to have learned 4 new words. He mentioned hat autism screenings start when he turns two, and that DS had really good eye contact. But I know that there are exceptions to rules, and I personally would like to start earlier than later if there was an issues.

Eta, we haven't been referred to any outside help, but his pediatrician wanted to if he didn't started talking more in the next few weeks.

Re: Developmental delays

  • I don't have any wisdom or experience, but **hugs**

I hope y'all get everything figured out ASAP. He might just be a tad stubborn and on his own schedule for development, you know?

  • We are in early intervention for L's speech and they have mentioned a few times that she just seems to be on her own schedule and she is so focused on her gross and fine motor she isn't talking much- maybe it's the same with your Lo? I will say since we started therapy she has improved dramatically! I don't know whether it Is the therapy or she was just ready.

  • I don't have any advice, but I wanted to let you know you're not alone!  DS only has a few words, but understands us completely.  Also, he's VERY strong and climbs things (like the drawer pulls in the kitchen to get to the counter) on the regular.  So my thinking is that he's just more focused on the physical.  My doc isn't worried.

  • I get the sense our doc is going to say something along those lines at our appt next week, just based on our last appt and DS' development since then.  i don't worry about it too much; we'll do what is recommended and deal with it then.  Until that happens, we're enjoying him as he is.  :-)

  • One of the concerns with autism is communication.  DS3 barely talks but he communicates very well.  He makes great eye contact and is able to express his needs.  My oldest, who has autism, could never do that.  Eye contact was horrible and he could only slightly communicate his needs.  He barely talked before age 3 1/2.  My other children are watched closely due to their oldest brother.  At our 18 month checkup the ped first asked if DS3 was putting two words together.  When I laughed and said the kid barely talks the ped then asked if DS3 had at least 6 words.  That is the bare minimum they are looking for at 18 months.  He has about 10 words now but is babbling more every day.  By the way, our ped is head of the autism clinic at our hospital so I trust him with these milestones.
