Lovenox Mommies - Induction?

I know there are quite a few of us who are on Lovenox on this board.  I had my 26 week high risk appointment today & they are already pushing for an induction.  They're actually talking about 38 weeks.  They're saying that being on the blood thinners & having Gestational Diabetes (even though my sugars are very controlled with the insulin) makes them induce at 38 weeks.  From everything that I'm reading it seems that the standard practice is induction after 38 weeks but there doesn't seem to be any actual reason why (other than the epidural issues.)  What are your doctors saying (if anything yet) & how do you feel about it?  I'm really hoping to be able to just let labour happen on it's own but will definitely do whatever I have to do to have a healthy & safe delivery.

Re: Lovenox Mommies - Induction?

  • I am on Lovenox (and just found out I have GD).  The plan from the get-go with me is induction.  I am down for this plan.  With a serious history of clotting I would be terrified to go natural since I'd have to be off blood thinners for an unknown period of time when we are all hypercoagulable due to pregnancy.

They hadn't told me 38 weeks, but said they'd plan it one week out when we got closer to.

  • I also have a history of clotting. I have one bleeding disorder and one clotting factor. The plan from get go has been induction at 39 weeks I am also ok with this. I want a natural delivery more than anything but whatever it takes for a healthy baby and me not to die of a clot in the process. I had a close friend die of a pulmonary embolism literally two weeks after I got out of the hospital with mine so I am terrified of getting another.
  • They want to be able to control when your last dose of lovenox is, if you're planning for an epidural I'm pretty sure they want the last dose more than 48 hours prior. Also, for the delivery they don't want you to lose too much blood. If you have a medical indication (GDM) you can be induced prior to 39wks. The main reason is to avoid macrosomia.
  • Thank you all for the replies.  I'm just so disappointed that again I'm going to have to be induced.  I'm also very concerned that the earlier the induction the higher the chance of having to have a C-Section.  There are just so many things going through my head.  Will baby be ready at 38 weeks?  Probably at my next appointment I will let them know that I'll go ahead with the induction but not until 39 weeks.  I want to be sure that baby is ready & that my body is ready.

  • An early induction doesnt necessarily increase your chance of c-section. I've had to induced patients at 35 and 36 wks who have done just fine and have vaginal deliveries. Their induction might take a few days, but they get delivered vaginally. Who knows your body might go into labor prior to 38 wks anyways or at 38 wks you might already be dilating. I would just suggest at your 38wk appt ask them to give you a estimated fetal weight and to check your cervix. If your baby isn't too big and cervix not favorable 39eks might not be a bad idea.
