Maybe I'm just being overly vigilante of OPs posts, but this smells a little like fear-mongering to me. Regardless, I think the most important take-away from the article is this: "A mastitis infection warranting a mastectomy would be extremely rare" You can get lots of good advice on this board about possible causes of breast pain and how to treat mastitis. This actresses experience is kind of a freak occurrence. Of course, you should always seek medical care if you have a concern. But no one should read this as something that is likely to happen to them if they breast feed.
I agree w/ PP. I have had several episodes of mastitis, and I can assure you that the breast pain was the least of it. Trust me, you would have to be extremely ill before it ever came to a point of needing surgery to treat mastitis, let alone a "near mastectomy." I would agree with the suggestion that this would be a highly unusual situation, and it's not something that could sneak up on you.
Further, I would like to point out that this article is poorly written and does not even make medical sense. For example, mastitis doesn't "mutate into something else." I am not sure if they are suggesting that she had a resistant infection or what. Anyway, a little fact-checking / editing by a physician would have gone a long way.
