Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When did you start giving your baby "real" food?

We have been giving DD purees for about 3 weeks now. Yesterday I decided to mush up a banana and let her get her fingers in there and "feed" herself. It was literally mush and not piecey at all and she basically gagged on it. I am scared to try giving her food now because I worry she will choke. I figured by 6 months things like mushed up fruit or avocados or scrambled eggs may be ok.....but I guess not? She doesn't have teeth yet which maybe makes a difference? I'm not sure, DS did have teeth at 6mo and was always so far ahead of the developmental curve physically whereas she is more slowly developing physically so it is hard for me to compare.....

i wouldn't start giving her solid food like that until 8-9 months. i just started it with ds a few weeks ago. even if it's soft, they can still gag on it. ds still gags on things sometimes... it scares me to death.

  • we have been doing soft mushy finger foods for about a month. he wont eat purees. he also has no teeth. gagging is fine, it is part of the learning process.
  • Just because your LO is ahead on the physical developement scale I wouldn't push it with foods.  Having teeth isn't a sign that his insides are ready to digest the bigger things.  Soft bananas I would say are fine at this age.  Pretty soon (if you haven't already) you can start with puffs, yougurt melts, etc.  But I would suggest limiting it to that until 8 or 9 months. Your baby's digestive track still has some maturing to do and you don't want to overwhelm it.  We got the okay from our pedi at our  9 month visit to be feeding DD 'table food' as long as it's baby safe, and we've slowly been doing it since then.  But only just recently has she been eating almost the same thing as us on a fairly regular basis.  As much fun as it is to feed your baby new foods, don't rush into anything :)

Yeah after that experience I think I am going to hold off a little longer. She is so different from DS, I really have noticed a big difference between having a boy and having a girl too, he developed so fast physically but slowly verbally and she is just the opposite!

  • i should also add that i am probably paranoid, LOL. just make sure that you talk with your pedi, he/she should give you some good advice as far as solids go.

  • I want to say around 7 months. Once I saw that she was ok with puffs, I added Cheerios. When she was good with those I added in pancakes, banana, pasta.

We have also tried peeled sliced apple, carrots, celery, meatballs, hot dogs, goldfish crackers.

She also likes wagon wheels and she love love loves Lil Crunchies!

I think yolks are ok, but no whites...but, maybe I have that backwards...

I have been too paranoid to give him anything other than the gerber 1st foods, breastmilk and his oatmeal cereal.  He's not sitting on  his own yet, so I'm afraid to give him any kinds of puffs or cereals.  He LOVES eating solids though and experimenting.  Hope I'm not holding him back by being a worrier.

  • egg yolks are fine, egg whites are a no no.

We just started on more solid foods and adding more lumps into the mashed up stuff we give her (I make her food).   I gave her hardboiled egg yolk in pieces.     She turn 8 months next week:)    There's no rush with fingerish type foods - I'd wait a while.

  • Check out www.babyledweaning.com for info on giving table foods from the get go. I make my ds's food and I make it lumpy because after a few weeks of purees he hated them and likes to chew. Gagging is thier way of learning how to move food in thier mouth and learn to swallow. Mashed banana isnt the best food to start with because its so thick and gooey its hard to swallow. You could try mashing cooked peas so its mashed but still has bits of peas in it. Also anything thats hard to pick up or eat, you can blend up some cheerios and dust the food with the cheerio dust (or baby cereal) to make it easier to grab.

Eggs yolks are ok, you can do scrambled eggs ect. Egg whites are a definet no no until 1year.

  • I started giving DD some table foods at around 6 months (she started solids at just after 4 months).  I wish I had known about BLW sooner, and I wouldn't have fooled with purees at all.  Broccoli (I steam it) is a good one, because the stems act like handles for LO to hold.

  • We've been giving table foods since about 6 1/2 months.  I can't say we do BLW because we do still do purees, but we finish up every meal with finger foods and I pick up a lot of great ideas from the BLW ladies.

DD does great with them.  She gags sometimes, but that means that she's pushing the food back out - which is what she should be doing.  She's great with foods: soft cooked peas, carrots, string beans, peaches, pears, apples, frozen bagels, etc.

  • My younger daughter choked and gagged on purees and hated them and ended up going straight to table food.  I even tried cooking vegetables really soft and she won't eat them that way.  Turns out she only wants stuff how we eat it.

This is what we are doing also (started at 6 months).

DS gagged at first but got over it real fast.  Of course I don't take my eyes off him when he's eating anything just in case...but ya, it's scary at first.  Now he's fine.

  • What is BLW?
  • Gagging is not choking and is actually a very important part of them learning how to eat solid food.  It's their body's way of saying "abort!" BEFORE they choke so try not to discount its benefit.  They don't need teeth to do solids.  They can have lots of soft things like steamed/baked veggies and fruits, toast, shredded cheese, shredded meats.  You don't HAVE to give them table food but as long as you can squish it between your fingers with a little pressure, they can mash it with their gums.

  • Three pediatricians all agreed that it's safe to start solids at 6 months. We either mash or chop up whatever the rest of the family eats. The only restrictions are no RAW honey until 2 years and no cow's milk until 9 months. Unfortunately DD2 refuses milk and will only drink water from her cup. We are still nursing but I am trying to wean in the next 2 months (1st birthday). I have tried 17 different styles of bottles and none are to her satisfaction. Thank goodness her older sister didn't have that problem. DD2 loves all food whereas DD1 was on the 1 food at a time plan and is super picky at 7. If only I could mix the 2 girls and make them each a bit more moderate, the 2 extremes are very difficult.

  • Bananas and puffs around 8 months. At 10 months I started giving her a lot of foods. I still cut them up pretty small but she takes bites now. she's 11 months.

  • We do BLW my amost 10 month old eats anything we eat (except honey). She had pasta tonight with fish, steak a few nights ago. We started slow and yes gagging is terrifying but gagging is not chocking!!!! Google BLW to see how to cut food (I do long strips) we did a lot of avocado in the beginning.
I've never really done anything processed due to allergies (except Kix which is a very recent addition). There are tons of better options for your LO
  • DD is 11 months and is still gagging on chunks of food occasionally and she has 5 teeth :) . I think its very individual to each baby. If she gagged I would suggest waiting a week and try again. Once she is ready she will slowly accept it. Don't rush it. She has a lifetime ahead of her to eat solid "real" food.
