Question for CD Moms

edited August 2014 in September 2014 Moms
Hi there,

We are planning on using disposables at first until LO can fit into one size cloth diapers. I was just wondering what diaper pail/trash can you are planning on using. We will be using wetbags for the diaper bag and care giver, but not sure what to use at home. I was considering purchasing a trashcan like this one from Target https://www.target.com/p/sterilite-44-qt-11-gal-step-on-wastebasket-white/-/A-13771724#prodSlot=medium_1_2&term=sterilite+trash+can so we can use trash bags at first and planet wise liners once we start CD'ing. What say you September mommies?

Re: Question for CD Moms

  • We just have a plain plastic trash bin that we use. We opted for a thinner style so it takes up less space. We were able to keep the lid on ours until around a year when the diapers started smelling so we removed it and haven't had a problem since.

  • Thanks ladies! I'll go with a trash can without a lid instead.
  • Standard 13 gal trash can with planet wise pail liner. No lid

  • Breast milk only poop doesn't have an odor and once they start solids the poop gets rinsed off in the toilet before it goes in the pail. Our pail has never smelled like poop, but with the lid on there were times when there was a strong ammonia smell. Keeping the lid off allows the air to circulate and keeps it from smelling foul. At least that is the case, IME.

Exactly! Also, you will likely want to wash more often than 3 days. Like every other day. So it's really not sitting in there very long.

  • I won't pretend my pail doesn't get stinky before laundry day. Ammonia. IwashIevery other day. I think it's because his room doesn't have great air circulation. His poo diapers are in a small bucket in the bathroom, since I have to dunk and swish. He is 16 months and on only solids.

Newborn poo just smells sweet. It isn't a bad smell. Not that I enjoy it. Haha.

  • Oh! Also, a lid can cause mold if you live in a humid climate.

  • You will absolutely need a spray attachment for when LO starts solids unless you are comfortable with dunking and swishing the diapers in the toilet. @mamakate12345‌

  • Dunking and swishing sucks. I can't get a sprayer that works with our plumbing without redoing the plumbing. I gave up. I'm hoping our next house will cooperate.

  • We use a regular trash can lined with a wet bag, with a lid. I can't imagine not trying to contain the smell. Once on solids, we use liners and flush the poop but not the liner itself ( can be rough on plumbing). No need for a sprayer or dunking if you don't want to.

I have been meaning to look into those. I need to measure the hose. I think it needs to be at least 5 feet to reach.
