Where/ how did your newborn sleep?

LO is 5 days old today and I'm curious to see where/ how your LO's slept those first couple weeks. In the hospital, he loved being swaddled. Now he's not really having it. I'll nurse him and he'll be calm and sleepy, then we'll lay him down and hell usually start fussing in about 10 minutes. It's rare that he'll sleep in the bassinet, swing, or crib. He seems to only sleep well on someone's chest, which is fine, but don't want this to become a habit(can 5 day olds have habits? Lol) . If this has been discussed previously, please link...I'm not having any luck searching on mobile.

Re: Where/ how did your newborn sleep?

  • My lo is 4.5 weeks now and at night has always slept swaddled in her bassinet. We switched to the RnP for a few days hoping we'd get some more sleep but didn't work. So she is back in the bassinet.

  • LO is 5 weeks old. We are still having problems getting him to sleep on his own. Because he's too little to really do any sleep training, we are bed sharing for now. It isn't ideal, but we have to sleep somehow! DD was the same way. We were finally able to transition her to the crib around 5 months using the guidelines in "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child".

I don't really want to wait that long to do something this time, so I am going to start working on this issue more next week after DD starts school.
  • DD is 2 weeks old. The first few nights she was either bed sharing with me or sleeping on my mom. She's in the co sleeper in our room now, occasionally I pull her into bed if she's taking awhile to settle down. Try holding/rocking a little longer so LO is in a deep sleep before you put them down.

  • DD will be two weeks on Sunday. She falls asleep on the boob after being changed and then I hold her for a few minutes to make sure she's truly asleep. Then she goes in her swing! She'll take short naps in her crib, but not overnight yet.

  • Liam is 4 weeks now. He never liked the bassinet so we went straight to the crib (his room is across the hall and we have a video monitor). He wakes up every three hours to eat and usually stays in bed time mode from 10pm to 6am. We swaddle him but leave his arms out or he gets upset. As long as he has ate we can usually put him down awake with his turtle (has a light that projects waves and plays songs) and he goes to sleep on his own within 10-15min. Because I am BF I'm not sure how long it will take to get longer than 3 hour stretches.
  • We tried the crib for the first 10 days or so..after several nights of absolutely no sleep, we invested in a mamaroo swing. She sleeps for 3 hour chunks all night, swaddled, without much trouble, in the swing. During the day, she will only sleep on me or in the Moby. I'll take what I can get and I'm grateful for the bits of sleep I get at night.

  • Mine slept on me (swaddled), next to me on the couch (swaddled) or next to me in the RNP for the first few weeks.  Now, she is in the RNP 99% of the time, and maybe 1% on the bed next to me because she wouldn't handle the RNP.  She has hated swaddling since week 3ish.  Still trying to transition to the crib.  Last night was hell, and tonight is starting off rough, so I am not sure I will move her in there.

My DS is 4w and wouldn't sleep for longer than a few minutes unless someone was holding him. It was exhausting. I decided to give the RnP a shot and thankfully, he loves it.

I'm still trying to get him to nap solo laying flat on his back during the day, but at night it's all about the RnP.
  • DS sleeps in a sleep sack swaddlers in his bassinet. But it usually takes a 2 hour feeding to make him happy enough for bed. Guess what I'm doing right now. Moo. He's 2 weeks 1 day old.

DS is 2w4d and sleeps in a RNP swaddled in a halo Swaddler. He busted out of a regular swaddling blanket right away. He seems fine with sleeping in the RNP (did not like the bassinet) but my dd would only sleep on someone for the first 5 or 6 weeks of her life. Eventually we were able to get her sleeping in the RNP swaddled and eventually her crib. Do what you can to get LO to sleep at this point and worry about undoing any "bad habits" later.

  • DD is doing pretty well (sleeps fairly long stretches at night, swaddled in a SwaddleMe, in the bassinet of the PNP) but DS2 was a more typical newborn who would only sleep on someone for the first month. We eventually got him to be okay with sleeping swaddled in his swing. With a newborn, you do what you have to. Like PP said, you can undo "habits" later on - just survive for now.
  • LO is 2w3d and she sleeps swaddled, in her bassinet. We're spoiled with a really easy baby. She sleeps anywhere from 3-5 hours before waking for food. Then she goes right back to sleep after finishing her bottle

  • I don't think it's a habit, it's just super comfy having just come out of your snug and warm tummy. I did that last year off and on (baby sleeping on chest) for about one month with DD. All I know is we both got sleep. Eventually she was in her bassinet nightly and tightly swaddled.

This baby, he sleeps swaddled in the same bassinet she did right next to our bed. I've done a sleeping on my chest night maybe twice with him. Just hang in there, the first few weeks can be rough and feel very long.

  • Thanks everyone for the input! Glad to hear everyone else is/was experiencing similar things; makes this FTM feel more confident! Looks like I'll be breaking out my baby sling sooner then expected and snuggling him more! Thanks again!

  • DD has been sleeping swaddled in her crib for her first two stretches at night (4 hour, then a 2-3 hour stretch). After that, we usually bed share. I would say try the swaddle again. DD acted like she hated it at first, but now she'll calm right down when she sees the woombie or miracle blanket.

  • Rock n play for night time and naps, swing for naps when she's fussy, usually the crib for one nap a day, and typically we fall asleep during a feeding in the early morning so on my chest.
  • My LO will not sleep well unless he is swaddled.. He gets his hands in his face and pulls his Bink out and wakes himself up.. He is either in his swing or bouncer to stay up right. Were having formula issues so he throws up really easy :-(
  • DD is 3W1D and she sleeps swaddled in her bassinet. It took us a few tries to figure out the best place for her to sleep, but she eventually settled down in her bassinet. We do the same routine every night so I think she knows it's bed time. We give her a bath (every other night), change, swaddle, bottle and sleep. She falls asleep on us and we wait until she's in a deep sleep then put her in the bassinet with the sleep sheep on. She'll sleep 4-5 hours wake for a bottle then sleep another 3-4. We've been pretty lucky with her scheduling. Although we haven't yet mastered her falling asleep on her own, I'm assuming in due time that will happen too!

  • DD likes to be swaddled with her hands up by her face.  We use the SwaddleMe.  I had been putting her in the RNP and I'm not sure she really likes it.  She prefers to sleep on her side, sort of stretched out.  So I had been starting her out in the RNP, then after first feeding we would just bed share, with her on her side.  Now that I found all the pieces to the PNP, I'm going to try that tonight with the bassinet.

  • In his playyard in a cosleeper since he's so small at night, during the day he naps in our arms or his snugamonkey rock n play.
  • DS is 6 weeks. He has never tolerated the basinet for more than 30 minutes, and HATES being swaddled. In the first couple of weeks, I slept in the recliner holding him and he slept 2-3 hour stretches. We never planned on bed sharing but that's what were doing. DS sleeps for 3.5-4 hours, needs a diaper, eats, and then will sleep/eat in 1-2 hour intervals after that.

  • Baby boy is a month old and sleeps double swaddled in his arm's reach cosleeper. We also keep a hat on him because we sleep with the air conditioner at 70.

  • Ruthie sleeps in a sleepsack in her crib. She doesn't like to be confined in any way.
  • LOs are a little over 5 weeks old. Both are swaddled in their cribs in their rooms. If they go down awake they tend to get their arms and even feet out, but that's okay. DD1 was the same way.

  • Can I tag on a question here?  I'm super anxious about SIDS and general safety for DD (most of it is irrational because of my baby blues).  However, she's been home for 2 nights now and typically only sleeps for an hour or so at a time.  She's sleeping swaddled in her crib but I'm thinking that maybe she should sleep in her swing at nights just for now.

The problem I run into is that if she's swaddled, I cannot buckle her into the swing.  Isn't that unsafe?  I wouldn't be totally against letting her sleep on my chest at night a few times but again, isn't that something they really don't recommend because of the risk for SIDS?

This new mom thing is tough...

  • I have also thought about putting him in his swing unsnapped, but haven't yet. I talked with our pedi last Friday and he wasn't concerned at all that LO sleeps on our chest a lot ( while in a recliner/armchair). He didn't recommend bed sharing however. We've all been much more happy with him sleeping on our chests. Sleep is great!

  • Add me to the list of those who are co sleeping for the time being (on my chest or next to me in bed). It definitely wasn't the plan, but one-month old Tessa just plain will not sleep on her back by herself. Not in her crib or Arm's Reach co-sleeper or Rock 'n Play or Snuggle Nest, and swaddling doesn't seem to help. Yesterday for the first time she napped during the day for a whole hour in the Rock 'n Play (hooray!). I couldn't get her to do the same thing again last night, but I am hoping that we are generally making progress now that she's a bit older and bigger. I am quite stressed about the safety of co-sleeping, but I don't feel like we have any other options yet. Gotta get those precious hours (or minutes) of sleep wherever we can.

  • I'm so glad to read that I'm not the only one co sleeping. I read a lot about co sleeping and I think it can definitely be done safely. I'm not against co sleeping at all, but wasn't sure it would be for us. I think we are content for now because we are sleeping most of the night. Plus breast feeding is so simple at night. My husband doesn't mind but it would be nice at some point to have the bed back to ourselves.
  • After we brought him home from the hospital, DS slept swaddled in the pack n play at night, and in the rock n play during the day. Now, DS sleeps in his crib for at 5-6 hours at a stretch, not swaddled. He still does his daytime naps in the rock n play.
