I feel like my bump has hardly grown at all the last 2 or 3 weeks.. If anything I think I lost a pound or two! I thought this is the time they grow the most? I'm so paranoid I haven't been eating right or something and she's going to be tiny:/ I have my 36 week ultra sound Tuesday.. So ill know more about how big she is then.. But I'm really nervous about it!! Anybody else feel this way?? Or am I being crazy? I feel like my sister in law was wayyy bigger at this time and she's about the same body size as me. I just want a healthy chubby baby Lol and while I do have an obvious bump.. It's just hard to imagine a baby in there that's only got 4 weeks to go! :0

**Update**
Thanks to all you ladies for reassuring me this week that we all just carry differently, made me feel better!!
I just got back from my 36 week ultrasound, and I was surprised when they measured her at 7 lbs 1 oz!! She's actually kind of big.... :O

  • trust me your doc would let you know if your size is something to be concerned about. and in all reality its not your size it's BABY'S size. everyone's body shows pregnancy differently

  • With DS my doctor was worried at the end because my belly wasn't growing. He was worried that I was losing fluid. After the US my doctor said that my fluid was fine and that my belly not growing was due to DS moving so low and my belly was changing to accommodate him, but not growing outward. I wouldn't be worried unless your doctor says something. Everyone carries their babies differently.
  • I think it helps to see diagrams: https://www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy-week-by-week

Especially at the end, those images make it look like the baby just gets more and more squished in there (so they'll want to come out!!).
  • I'm exactly the opposite. I don't think I'm too big yet, but I worry I will get too big. Because my hubby's family pop out 10+ lb babies. Yikes! I wouldn't worry unless your doc says anything

  • If your doctor is not worried, don't stress about it. Even if your body type is similar to someone else's, it doesn't mean that you'll have the same pregnancy experience. Babies and bodies all do their own thing.

  • The size you are can vary from day to day just from how baby is singing out. I've been especially uncomfortable the last few weeks and found out he has switched to my left side for his back, butt under left ribs, feet to the right and his head is snuggled in in my right hip. Completely the opposite of where he was until recently.

You may also loose some weight or maintain your weight the last few weeks because lo is using so much and you can't physically eat enough at once to keep up. Just bring it up with your dr and they'll reassure you.
  • I agree with the others if your dr was worried they would mention it to you.  Its not so much your size as the size of the baby.  Women carry pregnancies in all different shapes and forms so try not to compare.

For instance, I have a decent sized baby bump but Im actually down almost 16 lbs from when I first got pregnant.  Blame it one diet changes from being diagnosed with Gest. Diab.  My dr would like me to put a few lbs on here and there, but as long as my baby is consistantly growing shes not concerned.

  • I worry about this sometimes but because my son had IUGR. That said, your doctor would have absolutely said something. My issue was discovered by my doctor who thought I looked too small and started measuring. But like everyone else said, all body types are different. Try not to worry.

  • I have been concerned also. Everyone feels the need to point out how small my belly is and it makes me nervous that my fluid is low or baby isn't growing properly. I asked the dr and she said everything is measuring exactly where it's suppose to I try to remind myself that they are the experts and they would let me know of something wasn't adding up.

People have kept it up with the "You're too tiny." comments my entire pregnancy, and we just scheduled an induction today because our little guy is actually gigantic!  Kindly tell your casual commentators to STFU, and relax Mama!

    All ALers welcome!
  • I know what you mean - It's so easy to worry! Some weeks I lose a pound, some I don't gain at all, and some I gain 2 lbs lol don't stress! Every pregnancy and baby is different and they all grow differently.
  • I worry about my baby's size; I also get comments about having a small bump. But based on how she reacts when I eat, even if she's born small, she'll chunk up quick. She seems to love food. I assumed this is just how my body does pregnancy but the comments do make me take notice of and analyze how my bump is growing more often than I would on my own.

  • Nice to read this - I'm in the exact same boat.  I'm at 36 weeks/4days and have a relatively small bump compared to others in the same range.  When I've told people I am within weeks of delivering, I get these shocked looks.  I'm only up about 16-17 pounds and when I weighed in yesterday I had actually lost a pound.  Not that I'm complaining.....believe me!  I asked the doctor too - mainly saying that I wanted to make sure the baby was safe.  She said - #1 - as long as the baby has enough fluid around him (which he does) he doesn't actually need to pick up that much more weight in these last weeks - which means I don't either.  She also said it is very normal to fluctuate up and down a pound or two in the end, depending on where baby is pressing I may not still have much room before feeling full.  And that all this means is that I'm probably not going to have a 9-10 pound baby....maybe more in the 6-7 range.  But I'm having one last detailed ultrasound next week to measure and estimate weight, length, position which I'm sure will give me the extra reassurance.
  • My doc (we call him the food nazi) told me he likes moms to only gain 15-20 pounds (he also runs an infertility clinic so he sees TONS of people trying to get pregnant, and are overweight), even though I was not overly "fluffy" when I got pregnant, and have gained 7-10 pounds so far in 35 weeks. Don't worry, your doc will definitely tell you if he/she thinks your weight is an issue.
  • Idk if this makes you feel any better, but I had my 36 week check up yesterday.
After losing 3 pounds at previous visit, I lost an additional 3 pounds in the past two weeks. However. Baby is still measuring good and the doc said that is all that matters. Doesn't matter what mom gains it matters what baby does. Doc will definitely tell you if they are concerned.

  • I feel your pain! I hate the "there is no way you are due in Sept! Your bump is way to small!" comments. I realize my bump is small. I have a crap ton of doctor's appointments because I am at high risk for IUGR and I stress about her size enough. Hearing people make comments makes me as sad and as angry as it would if they were commenting on how big my is. Whether small or big, I have no idea why people think it okay to make comments on the size of someone's bump other than their own.

  • I'm measuring 4 weeks behind but US showed baby is right on track. It can be due to the position of the baby or you might just not have a big bump.

  • i read a book and it says that during the 3rd trimester, we slowly lose amniotic fluid as the week goes-by (thats why post-mature babies have a higher risk inside the uterus if they haven't come out in the 42nd week); and plus we lose our appetite or we dont eat that much anymore bcoz our stomach dont have much space to accomodate the tons of food that we eat.

ugghhh! tell me about it! i find it really offensive when they make comments about being "too small" like there's something wrong with my baby that they know and i dont! ignorant people!!
  • Because people have no boundaries, I've heard everything from "Are you sure it's not twins?" to some version of "You don't look THAT pregnant." Lately, it's the latter, though. At my last appointment, my doctor estimated my baby was measuring a week ahead, so I couldn't care less what other people say. I know how easy it is to get stressed about every little thing, but you'll only drive yourself nuts! Trust your body, trust your doctor/midwife. You're going to be OK. :)

I had a small belly with DS, everyone always thought I was 6 months, even at 9 months. My dr said DS was in hot he 75 percentile and I must "hide the baby well" I wouldn't worry as long as your doctor isn't worried. Also remember when baby gets lower, you can look smaller too.

  • I understand the feeling. I'm naturally thin, and while I've actually gained quite a bit through the pregnancy, I don't really look like I have. I have had several relatives and friends ask me if I'm sure I have gained enough weight. My bump looks small in comparison to that of my friends who are at similar points in pregnancy, but our baby has been measuring "perfectly" at every appointment.

My midwife reassured me that, like previous posters have said, everyone carries differently and our baby seems extremely healthy. If your doctor isn't concerned, then you shouldn't be, either. Everyone is different! :)
