Genetics and stuff... anyone else

started pondering what/who their little one will look like?

At my recent u/s I was able to get a few glimpses of her in 3D mode, but couldn't get a real good look because her hands/arms were up by her face. However, I am convinced she will look like DH, and of course he's convinced she'll look like me. Nope. I've even compared our baby pictures. We're anticipating she'll be in the 9-9.5 lb range, and fairly long, 21-22". She'll likely have the same amount of hair as my other kids, as that's pretty much how much both DH and I had at birth.

My other kids looked similar at birth, with my eldest and youngest looking most alike. Apart from the curly hair, olive complexion and brown eyes, they look like my ex-husband (though we do have similar features). My second daughter is a combination of me and my former SIL, but mostly her. My first son was the only one born with wavy golden blonde hair, but his features resembled my eldest daughter's.

For second+ time mamas, did your babies look similar?

Re: Genetics and stuff... anyone else

  • My oldest got my lighter hair color but my husband's thick wavy hair. My younger son got my baby fine hair but my husband's ash brown hair color.

My older son got my extremely fair skin and my younger son got my husband's Mediterranean light golden skin tone.

They look very different but somehow are clearly brothers.

  • Mine looked completely different at birth, and they're pretty different now. DD1 looks like DH and MIL, whereas DD2 looks like me, my sister, and BIL (DH's brother). DD1 was long and thin, DD2 shorter and chunkier.

I have no idea what this little guy will look like, but he might have DH's nose if the a/s profile is anything to go by. :)

    Genetic soup is fun.

It's weird but to me my boys look similar but so different. They both have very similar facial expressions and are blondies (were baldies at birth). My first is my H's mini especially with his big brown eyes. However he is built more like me and my family, short and stocky. My second is my mini and has my blueish eyes but it built more like daddy, which is tall and skinny.

I absolutely can't wait to see what this one looks like, especially his eye color.

Here are my boys 1 day old, coming home.

ETA: From our u/s it looks like this one will have Mathieu's (my first) big pouty lips and Everett (my second) ears that stick out lol.

  • @Eora3 - My girls don't look much alike, at least not to me. Dd2 has much fairer complexion, from their dad's side. She also has the lighter hair. It's crazy how much she resembles her aunt when she was her age.

    Genetics is pretty fascinating.

My cousin's girls have the funniest blend. The first is the spitting image of her Romanian mom with dark hair and dark eyes - gorgeous. My cousin is half Korean and half Italian but looks fully Asian. Their second daughter somehow got just his eyes and nose shape but she had very light skin and light hair (seemingly out of nowhere). She looks nothing like her sister. You'd never guess they were related.

I'm the only other person in the family who also has this coloring (joke is there was a Yeti in the family somewhere), so when she was born I got about a dozen calls saying, "she looks like you!" Genetics are crazy.

  • DD looked just like H when she was born. Now, she looks nothing like him. She is all me.
We left our A/S yesterday comparing the 3d u/s to pictures of DD.
    I hope they alike!

  • I just kind of assumed they would look alike....now I'm super curious. My sisters and I all look like clones.

  • Our son is a total mashup of us and our parents. He has my dad's curly hair in the back but straight like DH in the front, DH's dark colored eyes but we can't figure out where the shape of his eyes comes from, DH's dimples, my smile, FIL's cheeks and head shape, etc. I'm curious who this one will look like because DS is such a combination of everyone. One day I swear he looks identical to me then the next he's DH's mini. Crazy how much they change so quickly.

@leosmom25 - Yep! It's very interesting. There are days I look at my younger daughter and think she looked similar to me when I was her age. Most people say my older daughter resembles me because of our complexion, eye and hair color, and hair texture. She has my nose, but her other facial features she gets from her dad. But most people don't immediately see it because he's fairer with blonde hair (when he had it) and blue eyes.

But my current husband and I have brown hair and pretty much the same complexion. He has obvious dimples and hazel eyes. I have light brown eyes. His mom and my dad have green eyes, so we're curious about her eventual eye color. And he and my dad were blonde until hitting 1st/2nd grade.

I'm black (with some Cherokee and Choctaw) and white, and he's white.

  • @aeonlux I can totally relate. DH is hispanic and I'm as white as white gets and DS is a total combination. He's darker complected than I am but much lighter than DH....until the summer. Now they are almost identical in color because DS is outside so much. I'm really curious for this LO because of the different races we both are it's always interesting to see the outcome of who they favor.

  • DS looked a lot like my FIL and dad when he was born. He still does but probably bc both DH and I take after our fathers. DS has my eyes just DH's color. I can't wait to see our DD.
  • I can't wait to see what she looks like :).  I'm Caucasian (scottish background) with blonde hair and blue eyes.  My DH is half Chinese, half Caucasian (scottish) with dark hair and brown eyes.
My friend who happens to be DH's relative (also 1/2 Asian) has two children.  DD looks half-asian with brown curls.  DS has blonde hair.  You'd never guess they are siblings.
Looking forward to see what happens!

  • This is one of the coolest mysteries as a FTM. We have absolutely no idea what to picture when thinking of this child. Newborns tend to have a standard look so I guess we're just imagining a standard Gerber baby right now lol. It's amazing though- Will h/she have my blue eyes? DH's hazel eyes? Be a blonde? Will grandma's red hair make a reappearance?

Are there any traits in particular you all hope your LO will get from either you or your SO? Personally, we hope h/she gets my hearing (DH wears hearing aids) and I hope h/she gets DH's teeth (they're so strong and beautiful).
