Insurance ruined my day... VENT

Today was already not a good day, my husband got called in for drill for the national guard, which means he has to miss our shower Sunday... but then I get an email from my midwife saying that my insurance has denied all coverage because they don't have an OB overseeing my pregnancy and birth. This means that we have to pay $3850 in 5 weeks versus the $1500 we had planned. Well the $1500 was already a stretch for us so there is basically no way for me to pay $3850 by then. I spoke to my mother who may be willing to help, but she wants to get through the baby shower before we start discussing this, and I need an answer before my next appointment on Tuesday.

It's looking like I'm going to have to switch back to a hospital birth with an OB, which I really don't want. I have been so happy since switching to my MW and can't even imagine having a birth in the hospital. (I've posted before about how they literally don't let you get up from the moment you get to L&D, or give you a choice of DCC and immediate skin to skin) this is not the birth I wanted, or that I feel is healthy for my baby. I know that the most important thing is a healthy baby, but I was really excited to get to experience birth my way.
Now everything just seems so hopeless and overwhelming.

  • Insurance companies suck! Maybe try calling them and seeing if there is any possible way to get it covered. It's not like you are doing it alone... I hate insurance companies...

  • I thought about calling on Monday. I know my midwife has spoken to them, but maybe hearing it from me would help. I have Cigna, and they are good up until now. The MW never have this problem with other insurance companies, but apparently I'm the first Cigna patient they have had.

Switching back to an OB at 31 after switching to a midwife at 24 weeks sounds like a nightmare.
  • So sorry insurance is denying you! FX you are able to work something out.

High cost or not though, I don't think its right to rely on your mom to pay it. That's a lot of money, and even asking is putting her in an awkward position. Maybe ask for a loan, but I definitely wouldn't expect anyone to help me pay for mine and DHs decisions...but then again, I make a point of being super independent so even asking for help if I truly needed it would be hard.

  • A few ideas..
    • Does your insurance cover any MWs employed by a hospital or an ob office?  I know there are some that work in collaboration with an OB practice, so you may want to explore that route.  You could call your insurance to inquire about that.
    • Is there anyway your MW would work out a payment plan with you, or have you asked about that?
    • Are there any other hospitals in the area that would offer you a birth experience closer to what you are seeking?

Oh I would never ask my mom to pay for it. She offered to pay for it before because she loves the MW so much but I told her no. At most I would ask her to lend me the money and I would pay her back within the next couple months. My mom and I have a very close relationship and have both helped each other out with money in the past and always payed each other back. I don't want anyone thinking I would take advantage of my mom like that.

    1. Yes, if they are under direct supervision of an OB or hospital my insurance covers it, but my MW are the only ones working a reasonable distance to me. I live way outside of the city, hence why there is really only one hospital option.

    2. I have spoken to them about this, they really only do payment plans up to 36 weeks, but I might bring it up again because of the fact that I switched to them so late in my pregnancy.

    3. The next closest hospital is an hour and a half away, I can look into them but odds are, I would end up at the hospital in my town anyway. =/

  • Oh, my goodness. I can't imagine how stressful that must be for you. I hope everything works out for you and you get the birth you want.

  • Thank you... I really need a massage after this lol.
  • I'm sure your midwife and an OB can work together to get you what you want from the insurance company without straying too far from your birth plan. It may be something as simple as your OB submitting a letter saying that you've been checked out by his/her office.
  • @jeniece47‌ unfortunately, that is probably not an option this time. He was going to ask though, but doesn't have much hope. They aren't willing to let people leave unless it's an emergency.

@cozybluebear‌ that's a good idea. When I call my insurance I can ask! Thank you.
  • So, in my ICAN chapter I heard something about montrice or montrose care? (I am butchering the spelling). Anyway, you pay something like $500 and a CNMW will basically monitor you at home while in labor and then, when it is time, you go to the hospital.. so basically,  you labor at home until it is TIME to push (well, not that close to pushing, but pretty dang close) and then you go in and have the baby.. so you labor at home but with the care of a professional monitoring you.

  • what a bummer! I think your best shot is a payment plan with the midwives, surely they would be willing to work with you to keep your business!

  • I guess maybe I should give up so easily, thanks ladies.
@11kacey‌ I live so far from the hospital that I would be worried I wouldn't make it in time lol. I Seriously live in the boonies... XD
  • Oh no. I'm sorry I don't have any advice. But I'm sending big hugs your way. :( I hope you can get something figured out soon.
