High-Risk Pregnancy

Is anyone on baby aspirin?

I've posted here before about an issue with my MFM. I'm seen at a perinatal center for Factor V Leiden, a clotting disorder. They refused to put me on Lovenox and only advised aspirin. We had a long heated debate about it and I brought a Hematologist into the conversation. My OB just sided with the MFM and gave no input. She literally just said "I listen to the MFM's instructions". Great. After discussing it with my SO, we listened to the MFM. They are checking me regularly so I felt better about that.

At my 32 week growth scan, they're going to tell me to go off of the baby aspirin. They told me this a few times in my first trimester but I didn't really think about it. Now that I'm 32 weeks, I'm having panic attacks. It pisses me off because they refused the Lovenox/Heparin therapy and now want to pull me off baby aspirin, too. Their reasoning is "risk of bleeding in labor" but what about risk of blood clots to my child? I know I have to discuss this with them and give my side of things, but I don't feel okay AT ALL with being on nothing. I get that women have emergency c-sections. I could very well be one of those women who has one. However, if you were to go in for a routine surgery, you're advised to get off a week prior to surgery. Why can't I just do that? Are they really telling me that if I were to go into labor today, I'd be in so much trouble over a baby aspirin? They couldn't figure it out and deal with it?

Has anyone taken baby aspirin during their pregnancy? If so, when were you advised to stop? I've read women stopping at 32, 34, 36, 37 and a lot weren't even advised to stop taking it. I just feel like they're taking another thing away from me and I can't mentally handle it. Any input is appreciated.

Re: Is anyone on baby aspirin?

  • I am on baby aspirin. They freaked at my slightly elevated Bp at my nt scan. Every time I've taken my Bp at home, it's been fine. But at the dr, it is up a bit. They told me to stop sometime around week 35 I think... Not sure exactly but I have some time since I am only 16w

Lurker here. With my pregnancy with DS #2 I was baby aspirin and heparin shots 2X daily. I didn't stop either of them in advance. The night before me repeat c section I didn't take either. This was the advise of my 'RE. Hope that helps. But I wasn't on either for a blood clotting disorder. It was due to inflammation of the body and recurrent pregnancy loss.
  • I am on baby aspirin due to severe sudden hypertension in my 31st week causing me to have a preemie last time.  I believe they said I will stop sometime around 35 weeks but my first appt is tomorrow so I will ask more about it then.  My MFM is the one that put me on it. I saw him when we were thinking about TTC again. I knew I wanted to do something...anything to make myself feel better. I called my OB's office and they said there's no proof baby aspirin does anything so they don't recommend it. The MFM said there's no proof it doesn't do anything so why not? He was very supportive of it.

Here is my thought.  People take baby aspirin all the time and have to get unexpected surgery.  Yes there may be a risk of bleeding but is the risk of that greater than the risk to the baby?  I mean you know you will have this baby sometime in the coming weeks (hopefully later rather than sooner of course) but not everything can be prepared for.  A person could be taking baby aspirin and get into a car accident and need surgery. They can't be told to stop weeks before in case they have an accident!

good luck and follow your gut if you think you need another opinion!

Thanks. I called OB and they said "listen to perinatal". They don't even give their opinion. It's so frustrating. I just want to switch. Perinatal just says "go off it we know what we're doing". What if I'm SCARED? No one seems to care.
  • My sister is heterozygous for Factor V and was only on baby asprin for a while before they switched her to Lovenox.  I am homozygous for Factor V and have a history of clots, so my hematologist has me on Fragmin shots.  I did find that my MFM didn't really understand or know what to do in my case, but my hematologist knows exactly what's going on.  I'd advise seeing one of those.  When my doctors don't agree, I make them talk to each other until they decide on what course of action makes the most sense for me.  (I actually had my hematologist advise me toward a new MFM once because of this).

  • I'm on both Lovenox and baby aspirin for this pregnancy. For my first pregnancy, I was only on baby aspirin until I saw the OB for the first time at 9weeks. Unfortunately, I developed preeclampsia and HELLP very very early and severe and delivered at 20 weeks so this time I'll be on both throughout the pregnancy. I have an OB, an  MFM, and a Hematologist and they seem to all be together on it. I'll switch from Lovenox to a heparin with shorter life span around 36 weeks hoping I get that far this time. As for the aspirin they never really said if/when I'd be taken off of it so I've always just assumed I'd take it the whole time?

  • I'm sorry for all the stress your doctors are giving you.

I have Factor V Leiden and triple variant MTHFR.  I was high risk for other reasons, including SUA this pregnancy and recurrent losses (details in siggy below).  I was on Lovenox + Aspirin until about 36 weeks, then switched to Heparin + Asprin b/c Heparin is shorter acting.  At one point my OB suggested I stop aspirin, but I felt very uncomfortable with it and ended up staying on until just a few days prior to my planned induction.  I was not concerned about slightly increased risk of bleeding if I went in to labor early and / or needed an urgent C-section.

If I had only Factor V Leiden, I would still want to stay on aspirin until at least 37 weeks or so, and probably longer.

  • Lurker ttcal**** I have suffered 2 losses, the 2nd one I was on BA but still lost it. Just recently my bloodwork showed I have homogeneous MTHFR but tested negative for factor v Leiden. My Mfm says no shots are needed and to stay on the BA.... Any experience here from anyone in this situation? Not sure if I should be on shots anyway and get a second opinion? Please and thank you!!!

Was that the only reason your OB suggested you stop? I don't get if theres other issues or is it just bleeding?
  • I've been on baby aspirin since about 14-15 weeks due to elevated blood pressure. They are trying to prevent preclampsia. I see both my on/gym and an EVMS Dr.... So far everything is good.
