Childcare

For those working moms, how did you handle/decide on childcare? Do you use nanny/in-home or center?

I have lots to think about regarding this. I make a decent salary and will need to work at least part-time, which I have the option of doing. I'm just undecided. Looking to see what others have done.

I work part-time and we have a nanny. It wasn't that much more to get a nanny than sending them to daycare, plus I don't have worry about getting them ready in the morning.

  • We have a live-out nanny (couldn't give-up my space to someone else). Our situation is slightly different as I have triplets. Considering how often kids get sick in daycare both DH and I would have no vacation/sick time if we sent them. Also, as other posts have said, we don't have to rush to get them ready in the morning. There is much more flexibility in scheduling as I travel occasionally for work and everything they need is right in my house :)
Both DH and I work full-time.
  • We were planning on using my company's day care facility -- located right on sight with a fantastic program...and then we had preemies. So, no daycare for us. DH and I both work full time.

We ended up hiring a nanny for 2 days a week, and my parents come in and cover the other three days. That helped keep expenses in check -- as paying a nanny is certainly more than we would have paid even for the (pricey!) day care option we initially had planned on.

The other perk of a nanny -- we don't have to wake anyone up and get them ready and haul them anywhere. Heck, our girls regularly sleep in until 8AM or later, now -- which is GREAT come the weekend. :)

  • I work full-time.  Both grandmothers take 2 days, and we have a nanny that comes in 1 day.  We also have a mother's helper that comes in a few hours 2-3x/week to help the grandmas out.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • I work FT.

My oldest continued to go to the daycare center/preschool he had been going since I started working when he was 9mo old.

My mom and sister split 4 days and watch the twins at our house. We pay them, but at a slight discount to what it would have cost to put two in daycare. MH and I alternate Fridays - I take 4hrs of PTO and work from home a half day (read=when they nap).

Now that the twins are 13mo, we want them in some sort of structured preschool setting fairly soon, like within the next year.

  • I am having a friend of mine come in and "nanny" while I am at work. She needs something that is frequent and consistent and I trust her implicitly (plus it is cheaper with two)

  • Our plan is that I'm going back to work part-time and our next door neighbor is nannying for us. It works out well for both families b/c she needs some extra income (SAHM with her daughter who will be about 5 months older than our girls) and I need to go back to work. Plus I know her well, trust her, and we have similar parenting styles. As a big plus she is bilingual and speaks to her daughter in Spanish and so has also agreed to speak to our daughters in Spanish as well, which both DH and I want. Even though she is our friend, we are working out a contract with all kinds of things spelled out like how much notice we have to give each other about absences, payment, lateness (on both parts) etc.

  • I work full time evenings and my husband works overnights with a rotating schedule. Luckily this works out that we only need someone a few nights a week to stay with the babies until I get home and one of us is always there to put them to bed. We are blessed to have family help us with this. It stinks because me and DH don't get to see eachother as much but its working now for our family.

  • We got a nanny. It was close to the same cost as childcare plus I don't have to get them ready, deal with sick kids all the time and our nanny does the dishes and laundry. We also have cameras all over so I can log in and see them whenever I want to.

  • I work full time and have long days. My husband is a teachers assistant so he had school hours and tons of time off. He will have to do both drop off and pick up. I am really anxious about him getting all 3 girls up and out of the house by himself. I have to leave the house by 5:45 so I won't be able to help.

Our oldest daughter goes to preschool. The twins will go to an in home daycare. Both the preschool and in home are within 3 minutes of DH work.

    Julia and Aubrey - 4/3/14

  • My MIL helps with my 4 year old (picks her up from preschool and watches her until I pick her up) but she isn't going to be able to watch the twins. It is just too much for her.

  • Both DH and I work FT and ours go to a daycare that's only about 3 miles from our house. Almost everyone in our neighborhood goes to this place so it came very highly recommended. Besides the occasional sickness-which DH and I seem to get from them-things have been great!
