Breastfeeding success after scheduled c-section...success stories and advice?

Hi ladies. I am due with my second baby in November. With my first, I had to be induced at the 42 week mark with and no sign of labor. Like most doctors, mine doesn't let you go past 42 weeks. Anyway, I ended up having a c-section because they said my hip bones were too narrow and baby was stuck. Apparently, it isn't impossible to have a vaginal birth this way, but it depends on the angle the baby comes down. If I hadn't had to be induced, it might have been fine. Anyway, they said I could try a VBAC this time if I want, but there is only a 50% chance of success. My plan is to go to the 42 week point and if I don't go into to labor on my own, I will just schedule the section rather than be induced again, because frankly, that sucked. One of my worries is about breastfeeding after a scheduled c-section. I read somewhere once (no idea where now) that labor actually signals the body that it is time to start producing milk. Do you think there is any truth to this? I guess I am looking for some success stories and/or advice about breastfeeding after a scheduled c-section, in case it comes to that for me. We had a hard enough time after my I unscheduled one, and I don't want to make it any harder on myself than it already is. It took four days for my milk to come in last time, and even the lactation consultant was pushing formula on us. Anyway, thanks in advance for any words of wisdom you might have!

  • I BF after my DS was born via C/S. I second the PP, I think it will be fine too. Don't worry.

I think it took 4-5 days for my milk to come in, but that is still considered normal.

  • I had a scheduled csection with DD. My milk came in on the day I was discharged from the hospital. We are still BF over 1 year later.
You should be fine to BF. It was a little more difficult to find comfortable nursing positions but we made it work. Good luck!
  • Good to know about the placenta detaching. Also good to know I am probably worrying about nothing. Thank you ladies!
  • No direct experience, but my sister had a scheduled c section with my niece, and they had a great extended breastfeeding experience without any problems that I know of.

  • I had a scheduled c-section with my 2nd child and we had no problems with breastfeeding at all. My milk came in quickly and the only breastfeeding issue we had was latch related which was easily fixed with the help of a lactation consultant. I wouldn't worry too much; you'll be fine!

  • My first was a Csection at 42.2 wks after a failed induction. Breast feeding went great.
Just had twins via scheduled Csection at 37.6 wks in May and they're doing great too (we've never supplemented).
It did take the twins longer to regain their birth weights, but I think it was mainly because they were born so much earlier. I did wonder if not having the 48 hours of pitocin caused it to take just a little longer for my milk to come in though.
I really wouldn't worry, even if there's a slight delay in milk supply, it will still come in (and you'll start out a lot less tired- I found the scheduled Csection way better than the induction/Csection experience). One thing- make sure you schedule the Csection for a time when lactation consultants are available for the rest of the time you're in the hospital (in other words not on a Friday).
  • Another success here.  I had one vaginal and two scheduled CS, both without labor.  I didn't notice any difference in when my milk came in (or the amount) with either type of delivery.  I've BF both my CS over a year!

  • I had a scheduled c-section. My milk took 3 days to come in, but one twin has been BF since the beginning (the other spent time in the NICU but also got breastmilk after it came in).

  • I had an emergency c-section at 41.5 weeks and it took two days for my milk to come in. Poor DS tried to BF the first few days and was frustrated. He ended up losing one entire lb in the hospital but has since gained almost six lbs in his 10 weeks of life. Still BFing and no other issues. Patience was all it took, really. Good luck!

  • I had a scheduled c-section. DD is 3.5 months and EBF. Zero problems.
  • I had a scheduled c-section. It took 4 days for my milk to come in. DD lost a pound in the hospital but we still don't know if part of that is because I got so much fluid before the surgery & she was a little swollen. Pedi totally not concerned. Supplemented with a little formula every day & she was back to her birth weight by 2 weeks. Supplemented with a little formula for a couple of more weeks & now have been EBF for about a month with a freezer stash. So it took us a bit but we got there!
  • I had to have honest emergency c-sections under general anesthesia for both of my daughters. I never had issues with milk coming in, it took about 2 days which I think is normal. In fact my youngest daughter was born at 35 weeks (due to issues with me but had to go NICU for respiratory distress) and I was told to stop brining in my milk because I had overfilled her bin and was taking up room in the fridge with all my milk.
  • My very good friend just had a baby w/a scheduled c-section due to her baby being breech.  I was there as soon as she came out of the anesthesia and the baby latched on fine.  She had some minor issues with latching but never once supplemented (I URGED her not to supplement!) Now she's going strong at 1 month pp.

So it can be done! just nurse often!
  • I have had 2 csections both very different! 1st was an emergency csection with ds having breathing issues, 2nd was scheduled.
I had no problems either way. With my second they brought dd down to recovery & she nursed right away and did great.
U will do great!!! It was much easier the 2nd go round.
