Baby Names

Middle name suggestions please

Hi ladies! I'm from the M15 board and heard you were all really awesome with name suggestions! My SO and I were thinking of choosing Lilith for a girl. We are having a hard time with a middle name.

Also if you'd like to comment on like/dislike of the name Lilith that's welcome too. :)

Re: Middle name suggestions please

  • If you aren't using a family name, the trick with Lilith is making sure the middle name is easy to say. Since the ending of Lilith is slightly awkward, I would stay away from middle names with strong F, V, or T/Th sounds.

    Maybe Lilith Ruby?

  • Lilith Kate
    Lilith Marie
    Lilith Jane
    Lilith June
    Lilith Nicole
    Lilith Mae

I'm not personally a huge fan of Lilith, but it's okay.

  • I love the name Lilith - it would be high on our list if DH had not nixed it. I'm of the opinion that middle names are the free pass part of the name - where you can honor a relative/friend whose name is kind of meh or where you can name your child for a favorite author/character/fandom or whatever. Here are some names that I think flow well though:

    Lilith Rose
    Lilith Anne
    Lilith June
    Lilith Grace

  • I love Lilith Jane!
  • OMG - you ladies came up with so many great names!

    Lilith Ruby
    Lilith Rose
    Lilith June
    Lilith Jane

    Are my favorites so far!
  • Lilith Autumn
    Lilith Magnolia
    Lilith Arden
    Lilith Antonia
    Lilith Anastasia

Lilith is not a name with nice connotations at all. It is kind of like naming someone She Devil.

I think that the Lilith tradition is very appealing to some people, especially those who have rejected patriarchal religions. I know a baby Lilith who bears that name specifically to honor the tradition of female independence that is central to the Lilith legend.

Umm... the way a person might celebrate independence by naming their child Lucifer? Seriously, though, don't name your kid after a type of demon that kills babies. Unless you're a scholar of ancient Mesopotamian religion and FULLY understand the connotations and for some weird reason still want to name your kid Lilith, don't do it.

The point is that Lilith has become a symbol of questioning patriarchal religions' stories about women. You don't have to be a scholar to be aware of the Lilith revival. Among liberal Jews, re telling the story of Lilith has been a thing for the past 40 years (think Lilith magazine). And Of course there is Lilith Fair. Lilith's recent history is all about reframing Lilith as the victim of an old slander that equated insufficiently submissive women with witches and demons. I myself am not interested in naming a kid Lilith, but you can't just ignore the last five decades of feminism and say that the name only means what it meant centuries ago. It has a modern history, and is used by many people to signal an embrace of feminist principles.

I tend to reject modern misappropriation of ancient history.
I think it's more of a critique than a misappropriation. No one is denying the demonic aspect of the Lilith tradition. They are offering a criticism of the text/tradition.

Or, you know, just looking for an "edgy" way to get to the nn Lily.

I suspect the "edgy" Lily factor coupled with ignorance of the tradition is the reason for most people who use it. Nothing like accidentally naming your kid after a demon... and even if it is deliberate, it's one thing to name your feminist website Jezebel (I'm a fan of the site, incidentally), and an entirely different thing to name your child Jezebel.
You are probably right. The Lilith I know is the daughter of a poly triad and I'm pretty sure they chose it as a deliberate, anti-patriarchal statement, but that still leaves 320 other Liliths for 2013.
