My midwife says since my prenatals make me sick just to take 2 flint stones vitamins. They don't have the iron that a prenatal does but if you don't have an iron issue I don't see the problem
Yeah, OJ is good for helping you absorb the iron, but bad because it can make heartburn--and thus throwing up--worse. Sounds like you might have to switch to chewables or gummies for the time being. Sorry, I know vitamins can get kind of expensive. :-( But keeping down nutrients is important, you don't want to just always be throwing up.
Oh what a bummer I'm just a little frustrated this is my first pregnancy and I want to make sure I'm giving baby all the right nutrients. I see my dr tomorrow for my glucose test i will make sure to ask if it's ok to switch to the chewable kind. :-S thank you!!!
Can I ask what brand it is, out of curiosity? I have bad little issues with my cheap Spring Valley kind, but when I tried to take a free sample of Similac prenatals that my midwife's office gave me, I immediately vomited so violently I had to clean the toilet, the rugs, the shower....
I've been having the same problem. After today, I decided it definitely has to be the vitamins. I'm going to try mine at night, but so worried it's going to cause the nausea to interrupt my sleep. I have a hard enough time falling asleep... I also had a good experience with some samples the doctor's office gave me and I may try getting those (unfortunately, they require a prescription).
I'm going to try the orange juice thing... Thanks!
@empiregrl5 I take them before bedtime and I've had no issue for the past month. The last time I was able to gulp it down was Tuesday night @wintersong139 they were given to me at my dr office. I'm going to try and switch to something else hopefully I find something that will go down easy! @christenld try bedtime they won't interrupt your sleep! Will keep you ladies posted!
I use OB Complete Petite which is much easier to take than any of the 10 other ones I've tried. 1 gelcap the size of an Advil is the dose. It is prescription though

@jessmoro15 It's called Natachew! It's just one chewable per day! Only downfall it's not a gummy its more like a chalky chew! I have a toothbrush for at night cause it left the taste of the chew on it and I have a different one in the morning. I take my chew right before bed so I brush my teeth almost after so I think that's why my toothbrush got the taste on it! But it hasn't bothered my tummy at all so far!
@krysmill the chalkiness sounds a lot better than what I'm currently taking :P thank you! I'm going to mention that to my dr as well I just want to find something that will work!
Rainbow light gummies saved me! I was in the exact same boat. Just make sure you take an iron supplelemt and some calcium of you aren't a dairy-fiend (and make sure the calcium has at least some vitamin d). Hope it helps!
The Vitafusion ones are sooo sweet. But like you, for a few weeks they were the only thing I could keep down. If you need the iron, liquid iron is much much better on the tummy and is actually better absorbed than pills. Good luck!
I took gummy vitamins until we conceived, then nature made on the days I felt well (90% of the time) but gummies if I just didn't want to take the nature made. I would also take them at night because iron can make you nauseous. If somehow I forgot, I took the gummies in the morning.
After 12 weeks I am not as religious about taking them. The thing about prenatal vitamins is that they are really most useful if taken daily for 3 months before conception occurs. Having a built up store of folic acid is what decreases your chance of neural tube defects, not taking the vitamins after the baby is developing. I still take them but I focus more on keeping an excellent diet and making sure my protein is at least 75-100 g a day. We cook in cast iron to fortify our food and I eat at least 1 serving of leafy greens a day for fresh folate. What you eat is 10x more important than your vitamin. Just mentioning it because if you can't get the vitamin down, it just isn't a huge deal.
Just got some VitaFusion gummies, and they're so yummy I wanted more than 2. Thanks for the suggestion! What iron supplement do you take with it? I'm going to give my other prenatal another try once I start feeling better and can handle it again.
I have tried 8 different prenatals, the gummies and even Flintstones and all make me sick. from week 6-12 I basically took nothing (some days I took a folic acid if I could handle it) now I take a prenatal every second day, It still makes me sick but not as bad. I was taking them for 6 months before getting pregnant and I am just trying to eat healthy now. I asked my doctor for a prescription but he told me it wasn't necessary as long as I eat a variety of food and take a vitamin when I am feeling ok.
